Polytechnic faculty member part of K-State's 'Family of the Year'
In 139 combined years of attendance at Kansas State University, the Spare family has been involved in academics, campus activities, athletics and overseas learning. Now, they will continue their legacy as the university's Family of the Year, and one of the members is faculty on the Polytechnic Campus!
Jessica Spare, who started teaching math on the campus in fall 2015, is the granddaughter of the late
Neva Jean Fleener Spare who began the family tradition. Jessica graduated from K-State in 2009 with her degree in secondary education.

Wildcats encouraged to take #JustDrive pledge
Kansas State University is one of seven Kansas universities promoting the Kansas Insurance Department's
Don't Text #JustDrive campaign through a statewide competition.
The campaign encourages drivers to make a pledge to not text and drive. The university with the highest percent of pledges compared to 2016 enrollment by
Nov. 22 will win.
K-Staters are encouraged to show Kansas that Wildcats don't text and drive by taking the pledge:
"No text message, email, website or video is worth the risk of endangering my life or the lives of others on the road. I pledge to not text and drive and will take action to educate others about the dangers of texting while driving. No text is worth the risk. It can wait."
Take the
pledge online or text Wildcat to 50555.

University-wide 'shred day' scheduled for October 11
Do you have years (or decades) of paper records that were once important but are currently irrelevant to the operation of the university? Do these papers contain information that shouldn't fall into the wrong hands? Then this event is for you.
The annual university-wide shred day will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and is sponsored by Information Systems on the Polytechnic Campus and the Information Technology Assistance Center (ITAC) in Manhattan.
Bags or boxes of documents to be shredded weighing less than 25 lbs each should be delivered to the loading area between Technology Center's east & west wings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. (see map above). A completed
document disposal form is required. If you need assistance in delivering your documents to the collection point, contact Information Systems at 6-2666.

Women in Aviation student club hosts annual 'Girls in Aviation Day'
Kansas State Polytechnic's Women in Aviation student club is inspiring the next generation of aviators!
The club hosted its annual "Girls in Aviation Day" on Sept. 24, inviting local young women, ages eight to 16, to experience the world of aviation from a pilot and maintenance viewpoint.
Participants got to operate K-State flight simulators, explore K-State aircraft, tour the aviation maintenance hangar, and learn about aviation career opportunities.
A big thank you to the Salina Journal who captured Girls in Aviation Day for their publication with the photos above.

New UAS course highlighted on Wichita news
Kansas State Polytechnic's unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, program is offering a new course and it has caught the attention of a Kansas news station.
KAKE News, located in Wichita, featured the UAS program's new Part 107 class, which is five days of training for professionals that want to fly commercially. The report highlighted the reason for the course - the FAA's new mandate of a written test - as well as how some of the participants plan on integrating UAS technology into their business.

Pirate Week takes over the Polytechnic Campus
Kansas State Polytechnic was taken over this past week by pirates!
The campus held its first "Pirate Week" Sept. 19-23, inspired by International Talk Like a Pirate Day and then organized into a full-fledged week of activities. Faculty, staff and students were encouraged to unleash their buccaneer spirit by enjoying pirate-themed movies, helping write a pirate novel and donning pirate gear.
We again would like to thank Tissa Salter and the FUN Committee for organizing last week's activities.

Congratulations to Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence winner Teresa Hartman!
I would like to give a big high-five to Teresa Hartman, a mathematics instructor who has served our campus for almost 10 years, for being named the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Marchbanks Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence.
Teresa is the first faculty member of the Polytechnic Campus to implement the Open Textbook initiative. In place of traditional textbooks in her College Algebra and General Calculus classes, Teresa has created a series of 10 to 15 minute videos that explain the information step by step.
Since arriving here in 2007, and along with teaching four math sections and online classes, Teresa holds workshops to assist students who need extra help learning how to use graphing calculators. She also has served as the faculty sponsor for the campus's dance team, the Spirit Cats; was elected chair of the Academic Affairs Committee of Faculty Senate; and has won several other awards, including a distance learning award and the 2016 Educator of the Year honor from the campus's Multicultural Student Union.
You are an excellent example of a dedicated teacher who truly cares about her students' success. Congratulations!
