"It is easier to take than to give. It is nobler to give than to take. The thrill of taking lasts a day. The thrill of giving lasts a lifetime." ~ Joan Marques

Dear Lara,

On behalf of all of us at Keepers of the Wild, please accept our heartfelt thanks to all of you who showed your support yesterday during Arizona Gives Day. Your donations, shares, and faith in our mission are deeply appreciated!

We did not reach our goal for this 24-hour online fundraising event, but the good news is the Arizona Gives Day donation portal is still open if you would like to help. Of course, donations made on our website are always gratefully accepted as well.

Speaking of our website, we recently added a cool new feature to the donation page. There is now a dropdown menu where you can designate your gift to one of three projects which are at the top of our priority list. You may choose from:

  • General Fund - we will apply these donations to wherever they are needed most upon receipt.
  • Fox Rescue 2024 - funds are urgently needed to support the recent rescue of 12 abused and neglected foxes from a horrible fox farm, with more fox rescues coming soon.
  • Emergency Generator Fund - help protect our animals and visitors with emergency backup generators to cover the sanctuary in the event of a power outage; one generator has been purchased, but two more are needed before the summer heat arrives!

Look for the Project Designation dropdown menu on our website and be sure to let us know where you would like your gift to be put to good use.

If you would like to donate to another area of need (food, medical care, park upkeep, or whatever interests you most), please contact us or mention your gift designation in the Gift Notes section on the website.

Your ongoing kindness and generosity is truly the wind beneath our wings. Thank you for all you do to support Keepers of the Wild and the precious animals in our care!

With gratitude,

Keepers of the Wild Board Member

THE FOX FAMILIES HAVE ARRIVED!

It isn't often that we're able to save a dozen lives at once, but last Wednesday, all 12 foxes we committed to providing forever homes for (rescued from a fur farm in Minnesota by Save A Fox Corporation), arrived safely at the sanctuary!

Watching as each fox was released into their new habitat and took their first steps on the ground, for the first time in their lives, was an indescribable feeling that was truly touching. The foxes wasted no time meeting each other and zooming around their new habitats with joy. Sniffing fresh air freely, digging, running, and playing with each other were all new experiences for these foxes and we are honored to be a part of their new life! These are the moments we at Keepers live for!

There was a total of 500 foxes at the fur farm and hundreds are still there waiting to be adopted out to reputable facilities that have the animals' best interests at heart. Our team at KOTW is continuing to work with Save A Fox to take more foxes out of the fur farm and rehome them at Keepers of the Wild. We'll keep you updated on our progress!

Keepers of the Wild would like to extend our sincere thanks to Save A Fox for initiating this important rescue mission and for entrusting us with the care of 12 beautiful lives in need.

WISH LIST WEDNESDAY!

The sanctuary animals are still in need of various items, including blankets, towels, and sturdy plastic toys such as children's slides and wading pools! Please contact Tess for questions or to schedule a donation drop off. Thank you!

STRIKING SCAVENGERS!

QUICK FACTS:

  • Keepers of the Wild is currently home to two stately turkey vultures, Ziggy, a male, and Flaps, a female. The two are a bonded pair, placed at the sanctuary in 2014 after being retired from zoological demonstrations promoted by local wildlife agencies.

  • Turkey vultures are New World birds that can be found throughout North America and are commonly seen year-round here in the Southwest. Those living in northern areas of North America do migrate, sometimes very long distances that stretch into South America.

  • With dark brown to black feathers, long wings, a striking red face, and a white-tipped tail and wings, turkey vultures are beautiful animals in their own right. Ziggy and Flaps will sun themselves by stretching their wings open toward the sunlight and when they do, their feathers become a spectacular show featuring a beautiful iridescent sheen.

  • Turkey vultures are scavenger birds that primarily dine on carrion but will also eat the occasional insect or decaying greens. Unlike most birds, turkey vultures have a highly developed sense of smell and can locate fresh carrion by its scent.

  • Commonly undervalued by humans, turkey vultures actually play a significant role in our ecosystems. Because they eat dead animals, they help dispose of decaying carcasses that can spread disease - and stench! Think of turkey vultures as Mother Nature's sanitary engineers!

HERE'S A JOKE FOR YOU!

Q. Why do vultures find it easy to fly on airplanes?

A. Because all their luggage is carrion!

VULTURES ... OR KINGS?

As noted above, vultures have a bad reputation because they eat dead animals and some people consider this creepy. But according to the website Mental Floss: "Some cultures admire vultures and their scavenging ways. In ancient Egypt, vultures were thought to be especially devoted mothers, so they were commonly associated with maternity and compassion. Also, since the birds soar at great heights with an all-seeing gaze, the ancient Egyptians viewed them as living embodiments of their rulers."

VOCABULARY WORD OF THE WEEK: CARRION

"Carrion refers to the dead and decaying flesh of an animal. Carrion is an important food source for large carnivores and omnivores in most ecosystems." - via kids.kiddle.co
