The number of Abortions has been in
steep decline in the US since
1990.Partially due to pills being
available on line.
More importantly the Affordable Care
Act in the US has made contraception
available for free like it is in other
countries where abortion is almost
non-existent.
Then there is the decline in 18-21
year olds having sex. Yes kids are
getting smarter!
Why am I bringing this up, why bring
up a topic that many graduates on
both sides of this issue feel angry
about?
Because this divisive issue is not
really about abortion. It is about the
control of women. As less & less
women actually have abortions we can
now focus on the real issue; Control
of women and our bodies. If we keep
going with this trend abortion could
be a non-issue in the next 5 years.
Moreover, if abortion was the central
issue we would have found a way to
control/punish men for their role in
pregnancies.
And yet there are no laws in the US
geared to controlling Men's bodies.
Because if "they" can take away all
laws that enable women to choose for
ourselves how and for what we will
use our bodies then we will not have
the ability to compete with "them."
Birth Control gave us the ability to
enter the workforce and have
Careers, not just jobs, actual
careers.
Some of you are too young to
remember in the early 60's and 70's
women were prescribed "the pill" by
thier doctors. If you were married
you had to have written permission
from your husband and if you weren't
your mom or dad had to sign. Does
this sound familiar to anyone?
Women do not need permission
anymore. We are perfectly capable of
making decisions about our own bodies
and lives. Just like men.
So if you want women to not get
abortions focus on the availability of
effective, easy to get, free birth
control for all women (and men).
Focus on teaching women (and men)
how their bodies work.
Focus on education for all women
because in study after study it is the
number one way to keep women from
getting pregnant.
So if you are really serious about this
issue you will stop controlling women
and give them more options for their
lives. Not take options away.
Cause remember the issue is control
it's CONTROL.
So if you are pro-choice start
widening your view of what is really
going on and if you are anti-abortion
start looking at what really works to
prevent abortions and advocate/fight
for that.
