A True Story...

Even after 20 years of working with animals, I continue to have experiences that blow my mind. This is why I live by the life-expanding philosophy of believe in all possibilities .

Earlier this year, I was standing in the rainforest of Costa Rica with a group of wonderful people that joined me for my annual trip. The forest was abundant with warm air, a multitude of buzzing sounds, a variety of bird whistles, and smells of lush green plants all around.

The man who guided us through the jungle spotted something special for us to see high up in the canopy of the trees. "Up there, the lump on the branch," he said to help us find what he spotted. It wasn't easy to make him out. Again he said, "there, right up there, the dark lump." We searched the trees to find our new friend in the wild.

The sloth laid upon the tree branch so still that indeed it was quite difficult to find him. His back was comfortably placed along the branch while he lounged facing upward toward the blue sky. Finally I spotted the sloth and was surprised to hear him exclaim "I am not a lump!"  I responded to explain, "you know, if you moved just a little bit, everyone would be able to see you and appreciate your beautiful self."

He then slowly, very sloth-paced slowly, raised his arms above his chest. Indeed this helped the people begin to locate him. Next, to my utter amazement, he clapped his hands. His long sloth arms gracefully flowed open and closed, again and again, with the clapping of his magnificent three-toed hands. His methodical gesture continued for several minutes.

We laughed and cheered, some of us clapping our own hands. Then I encouraged everyone to send him love and gratitude for connecting with us. We were full of happiness and smiles.

As we walked on for more adventures, someone asked, "how did you get him to do that Terri?" My answer...I didn't get him to do anything. I simply explained that movement would help us appreciate him and he did the rest. Of course, he far exceeded anything I could have come up with in a request.

This unforgettable experience that we all shared in the jungle of Costa Rica is exactly why I am open to all possibilities. Animals - domestic and wild - truly are a gift of heart warming experiences when we honor them with our loving presence.

Now, I'm beyond excited to be returning to Costa Rica in February 2015 to go forth into more possibilities!
