Long before Covid, infection control in SNFs has always been a problem, even in good ones. The key staff in this setting are the aides who give personal care to the patients. Most SNFs are understaffed, both nurses and aides. The staff are underpaid with few or no benefits and feel unappreciated.They are given more scoldings than strokes. Now with Covid, they are running scared. When you add to that the inherent vulnerabilities of the frail patient population, it is a sad, dark picture. The LA County public health director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, recommended that relatives withdraw family members from SNFs if they want them to survive."--Moira Fordyce, MB, ChB, MD, FRCPE, AGSF

We are a generous people, and funds are badly needed, especially in a crisis. But with so many scams via phone, mail and online, it’s important to give wisely and safely.
Q: What is the most important caveat when donating to a charity?
There are three main tips to consider before donating money.
1) Give from the heart. Strong feeling and involvement may keep you donating. Helping others is always a plus—and may even be tax deductible.
2) Ask hard questions! Check out Charity Navigator for an organization’s specifics and make a list of your concerns. (eg: Ability to earmark funds for a specific purpose—actual data and results to date, etc.)
3) Make sure to give where it counts!
Q: Is it wiser to give to large organizations or to a smaller group?
Consider that even a few dollars might keep a small charity afloat (abused women’s shelter) or a small gift added to many millions might more swiftly achieve a goal (breakthrough finding a medical cure or vaccine!)
Q: Is it effective solicitation to “rush a donation” because it will be doubled or tripled by some major donor?
Major donors, like small ones, want to see their dollars get “the biggest bang for their buck!” But always make sure there’s enough time to thoroughly check out the charity and prove the offer’s not too good to be true!
