"Why Are So Many Older Adults Dying In Skilled Nursing Facilities From Covid-19?"-- CB

(I asked Dr. Moira Fordyce to tackle this question.)

" Long before Covid, infection control in SNFs has always been a problem, even in good ones. The key staff in this setting are the aides who give personal care to the patients. Most SNFs are understaffed, both nurses and aides. The staff are underpaid with few or no benefits and feel unappreciated. They are given more scoldings than strokes. Now with Covid, they are running scared. When you add to that the inherent vulnerabilities of the frail patient population, it is a sad, dark picture. The LA County public health director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, recommended that relatives withdraw family members from SNFs if they want them to survive."--Moira Fordyce, MB, ChB, MD, FRCPE, AGSF

Funny but apropos for today's uncertain times. The mastermind behind Under Cardiac Arrest is John Donaghue, a talented art director from San Francisco. He has created dozens of comics about the frolics and humor of older adults. Enjoy.

" The Power Of Positive Aging"
-- David Alan Lereah, PhD

Successfully Coping With The Inconveniences of Aging

Do you see the "glass half empty or half full?" Our "attitude" plays a huge role in how we cope with aging. David Lereah's new book The Power of Positive Aging explains why optimistic people live longer, healthier and happier.

"Growing old is a bummer but you need to accept aging to fully live in your senior years. Once you accept your fate, you can better endure the inconveniences of aging and the inevitability of finality. You can enjoy the remainder of your life and appreciate every minute of it."

"Aging is both a blessing and a curse. Physical deterioration is a curse but with aging comes spiritual growth which is a blessing. As older adults, we need to focus on our spirits, not our bodies."

Lereah developed his positive attitude toward aging, illness and even death during his successful battle against stage 3 esophageal cancer. He is an economist, cancer survivor, motivational speaker and founder of the nonprofit organization UnitedWeAge.com.

What I love about Lereah's book is that it helps prepare for the greatest challenge of life--growing old with practical suggestions and specific actions for pursuing a balanced, positive life. Written in a conversational, non-technical style. One of the best books I have read on wellness and aging in a long time. On a scale of 1-10--I give it a big "10."

Some positive scoop in the midst of the pandemic--Americans give approximately $300 billion to charities every year
-- Evelyn Preston, The Money Lady

We are a generous people, and funds are badly needed, especially in a crisis. But with so many scams via phone, mail and online, it’s important to give wisely and safely.

Q: What is the most important caveat when donating to a charity?

There are three main tips to consider before donating money.
1) Give from the heart. Strong feeling and involvement may keep you donating. Helping others is always a plus—and may even be tax deductible.

2) Ask hard questions! Check out Charity Navigator for an organization’s specifics and make a list of your concerns. (eg: Ability to earmark funds for a specific purpose—actual data and results to date, etc.)

3) Make sure to give where it counts!

Q: Is it wiser to give to large organizations or to a smaller group?

Consider that even a few dollars might keep a small charity afloat (abused women’s shelter) or a small gift added to many millions might more swiftly achieve a goal (breakthrough finding a medical cure or vaccine!)

Q: Is it effective solicitation to “rush a donation” because it will be doubled or tripled by some major donor?

Major donors, like small ones, want to see their dollars get “the biggest bang for their buck!” But always make sure there’s enough time to thoroughly check out the charity and prove the offer’s not too good to be true!
