Now that school is out for the summer, more families are hosting get-togethers on their patios or by their swimming pools.  If you don't currently have an outdoor kitchen, bar area, or a television set up outside, you could be missing out on a great way to enjoy family, friends, and the great outdoors..

This month I share some tips to consider if you would like to add an outdoor kitchen or bar area.  If you don't have an existing covered patio, fear not!  Leading Edge Homes builds all type of covered patios, outdoor kitchens, screened rooms, and hurricane-resistant (steel-reinforced concrete) pool screen structures.

OUTDOOR KITCHENS ALLOW CONVERSATIONS WITH GUESTS - AND YOU ARE PART OF THE PARTY!

Outdoor kitchens, especially ones under cover, are all the rage.  Below are some tips to consider when planning one:
  • If you are going to cook a complete meal outside, make sure you have a refrigerator large enough to hold all the pre-prepped food and a sink, or sinks, large enough to handle food washing and clean-up.
  • Don't forget a spot for a trash can, paper towels, and spices
  • If you like to serve beer, consider a countertop beer tap and room beneath for a beer keg
  • A good layout not only includes areas for food prep, cooking, serving, and cleaning but also room for your guests to sit, and help you if you want that
  • Locating the outdoor kitchen relatively close to your main kitchen will help if you happen to forget something and have to go back inside
  • If you would prefer people not to congregate in the work area of your outdoor kitchen, locate the refrigerator and beer tap at the end of a countertop
  • Bar height tops can be useful for serving, eating and giving your guests a place to sit and talk while the food is being cooked - and you can be in the middle of the party
  • A long table with bar stools can work well if you don't have the budget or space for a built-in seating area
  • Make the kitchen the focal point of your backyard or covered patio area to draw your guests to the kitchen while you are cooking
  • While stainless steel cabinet units in a base area that has been stuccoed or covered with brick or stone is very popular, consider outdoor cabinetry made completely from plastic as shown in the photo below from In and Out Cabinetry (which I highly recommend).

WANT A SCREEN ENCLOSURE THAT WON'T COLLAPSE INTO YOUR SWIMMING POOL IN A HURRICANE?

When the posts and beams of your screen enclosure are made of steel reinforced concrete and they're permanently attached to the main part of your house, it is highly unlikely the structure will be damaged due to hurricane force winds.  That's why most insurance companies consider the structure (not the screens or aluminum) part of the house, which they cover under your homeowner's policy.

If your swimming pool screen enclosure collapsed after the hurricanes of 2004 - 2005, you replaced it with a fence, and you can't enjoy the pool area now because the insects bite you like crazy, maybe it's time to consider going back to a screen enclosure - one that laughs at hurricanes like the one above.

Or maybe a screened, covered patio is more of what you are looking for...

Either way, if you want to enjoy being outdoors, Leading Edge Homes can remodel your home to take better advantage of our enviable climate, while still protecting your investment.  Call us now to schedule a FREE construction consultation at 561-795-2551.

DID YOU KNOW...
According to history.com...

On July 19, 1910, the governor of the U.S. state of Washington proclaimed the nation's first "Father's Day." However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official, that the day became a nationwide holiday in the United States.
