And the Racial Equity In Action Winner Is...

Kindlewood

Piedmont Housing Alliance and National Housing Trust are the 2024 Housing Achievement Award winners in the "Racial Equity in Action" category for their Kindlewood project! This recognition celebrates an organization or institution that has successfully integrated racial equity into its policies, practices, programs, and budgets, resulting in reduced racial inequities and improved success for black and brown communities.

Why Kindlewood Out:

  • Commitment to EquityBy transforming a space with deep historical ties to racial injustice into an equitable community, Kindlewood is a shining example of progress for predominantly Black and brown residents and promises to add 300 homes to Charlottesville's affordable housing stock.

  • Community-Led Redevelopment: By forming a Redevelopment Advisory Committee composed of residents who received compensation for their contributions, Kindlewood ensured that the redesign and rebuilding efforts were deeply rooted in the lived experiences and needs of its predominantly non-white residents. This model of participatory development not only addresses physical and economic isolation but also fosters a strong sense of ownership and pride within the community.

  • Building Community: Beyond the brick-and-mortar achievements, the project’s focus on creating a Community Resource Center, an Early Learning Center, a public park, and a community farm exemplifies a holistic approach to community revitalization.

We at HAND are inspired by Kindlewood's journey and eagerly anticipate the thriving community it's constructing with each thoughtful step—we can't wait to see how it continues to unfold and inspire.

Please join us at the 33rd Annual HAND Honors, an event that promises to bring together industry leaders and colleagues to celebrate the Housing Achievement Awardees and the GenerationHAND Scholarship recipient, whose name will be announced soon!
