Mr. Krishna Kulkarni from University of Chicago's Center for Middle Eastern Studies joined AP World History classes to speak about how Islamic empires used coins as a state building method.

Is there a debate team for 7 graders? If not, could we form one?

There is currently no debate team for 7th graders. In order to form a team, students would need a teacher sponsor. If that is something you are interested in, please come see me in the Main Office and I outline the steps to form a new club/team with you.

If you bought basketball shorts for PE, can you exchange them for normal PE shorts?

We do exchange items in the School Store. The only stipulation is the item has not been worn or washed.

When will our mobile ID pictures be updated?

We use an outside company to take most of our student ID pictures. The news pics became available this week and have already been uploaded to Mobile ID.

Why is there an extra day of advisory this year? Now that enrichment is only twice a week, all the clubs are trying to fit into those two days and it’s making it impossible to participate in more that 2 clubs.

Historically, advisory took place three days a week. Last year being our pilot year for enrichment, we saw the need to make an adjustment to meet the needs of our counseling department having time with their respective advisories. With regards to club meetings, the ideal time to meet is after school, however on enrichment days, clubs can meet and extend their meeting time after school as needed.

Mr. Harris is soliciting questions for the Whitney Young Weekly. He will select and answer questions each week. Note: By submitting your question, you agree that the question and answer will be published and sent to the whole school community. Not all questions will be able to be answered/published. Due to the popularity of Harris' Huddle, questions may take at least four weeks to be published. If you have an immediate concern, please contact the Main Office during regular school hours at (773) 534-7500.

Allyship Tip: Destigmatize Support

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Talking about topics like suicide and mental health is often considered taboo, but the stigma surrounding suicide can prevent people from seeking help. Studies show that nearly 1 in 5 high school students have had serious thoughts about suicide. Someone you care about may be struggling, and your help could make a major difference. Help destigmatize mental health support using the following tips:

1. Speak up about mental health

2. Take talk about suicide seriously

3. Fight myths about suicide

4. Seek help when you need it

Click here to visit the DEI website for more in depth information and resources for destigmatizing mental health and preventing suicide.

IMPORTANT: Medical Compliance

Students who are not medically compliant with the state of Illinois' minimum health requirements received a letter in advisory on Friday. Please check with your child to see if they received an individualized letter. Hard copies of the medical forms are due to the School Nurse by September 30.
