Whitman Summer Concert Series 2024
The Whitman Summer Concert Series 2024 was a free, family-friendly event featuring live music performances every Thursday evening throughout the summer. Local musicians brought a variety of musical styles to the stage, creating a fun and relaxed environment for residents and visitors alike. It was the perfect way to enjoy a summer evening in Whitman Park with friends, family, and neighbors.
A huge thank you goes out to the Whitman Cultural Council for their hard work in organizing and making these concerts possible year after year. Their dedication ensures that Whitman continues to be a vibrant, connected community.

History Tidbit:
Whitman Central Fire Station
|
| | "The 1902 Town Report indicates that Boston architect Charles A. Brigham was hired to design the Central Fire Station, 54 Temple Street (1901), which was constructed by local builder Albert C. Whitmarsh (1845–1919). An historic postcard shows the historic appearance of the fire station building. The tower was removed from the 1884 fire station and the building was converted into a school; it was demolished by 1911. By 1917, alterations were made to the interior of the new Central Fire Station, which included the modification of a large room at the rear of the second floor into three company rooms, and the room at the front of the second floor was converted into a reception area. That same year, the fire bell, which had originally hung in the Auburnville Station from 1884 until 1914, was moved from its second home in the belfry of the First Baptist Church, 565 Washington Street to the Central Fire Station. Also in 1917, the town acquired its first motorized fire apparatus, which was housed at the Central Fire Station. In 1976, the bell was removed, and dedicated as a memorial in 1977, with a time capsule enclosed in the memorial. In 2000, the arch doors on the façade were replaced with rectangular, vertical lift doors. A large two-story addition was constructed on the rear of the station in 2001, including two large garage bay entrances."

Climate Can Do: Overconsumption and Sustainable Practices
What Is Overconsumption?
Overconsumption is the excessive consumption or use of something. Without change we could eventually run out, or create more than we can dispose of.
How Can We Help?
Live sustainably, make lifestyle choices that help you and the planet. Small changes make a big impact:
*Walk, bike or take public transportation whenever possible!
*Consider alternatives to single use items:
- A reusable shopping bag.
- Skip the plastic bottles; all sorts of reusable bottles can be found in metal, glass and recycled plastic
- Replace Saran Wrap with wraps made from beeswax, cotton, and tree oil that keep food fresher and can be reused repeatedly.
- Use reusable not paper towels.
*Consider eating 2 or 3 meatless dinners / week:
Don’t throw away leftovers; eating leftovers will help you avoid food waste and save you money. Freeze pre-made meals for handy eating later.
*Rather than replacing, repair.
Do not automatically discard broken items when they break. Instead, try repairing it. Using this method can save you money and reduce landfill waste. Repair shops and You tube Videos are readily available to help you fix things.
*Join Buy Nothing.
With Buy Nothing, you can get rid of unwanted things around your house and get things you need for free. As their motto states “Buy Nothing. Share Everything,” a sustainable living app aimed at the community.
*Shop local.
By shopping locally, you reduce the impact of transportation on the environment and support your local economy.

Do we ever stop, reflect, and express our gratitude for having struggled? I know that's difficult, but very valuable for me.
If you are wondering how or even why you should be grateful for struggling to reach your goals, have a listen.

Exploring the Estuary by Land and Sea
The North and South Rivers Watershed Association (NSRWA) is excited to continue its long-running program, Estuary Explorers, in 2024. This program offers youth and adults the chance to embark on educational adventures around the estuary, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the environment through hands-on experiences.
Through a variety of activities, including exploring by land, kayak, or pontoon boat, participants engage in meaningful and educational watershed activities. These activities are designed to meet state science standards and curriculum while being fun and engaging. The program is tailored to fit the needs of its participants, making it an inclusive and enriching experience for all involved.
Thanks to the generous support of the Michele E. Dufault Foundation, Estuary Explorers reached 283 youth and 45 adults in 2024, with even more programs planned for the fall. This initiative allows participants to explore parts of the estuary they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to visit, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the local environment.

15 Years!
I feel like we've grown up together, you and I... especially when I look at the layout and tone of those early 2009 BuzzAround issues.
Not only did the newsletters involve more colors, with my design tendencies leaning toward Edwardian, but also saw myself as an unofficial cheerleader for everything that makes our village stronger:
Volunteers: " Thank you to the Girl Scouts for their food drive, HUGE wonderfulness!"
Small Businesses: " Congratulations for your certification, Sandy, way cool!"
Civic Participation: “ Here's a link to the Warrant, the town meeting is Monday night, don’t miss it!”
Effective municipal services: "The DPW did an incredible job with tree removal after the storm!!!"
As the years went on, my writing style matured, and the design evolved. We streamlined our process and chose color accents that reflected our community. Your good news continued to inspire us.
Through growing pains and COVID, we dug deep and found stories that strengthened our communities. We highlighted volunteers, celebrated small businesses, informed the public about civic participation, and cheered on our essential and municipal workers.
Your BuzzAround has always been a team of people who care about building strong civically minded communities and as we matured as an organization, we have instituted systems to ensure our vitality. We train college interns on volunteerism, local civics and corporate responsibility. They learn the importance of
knowing their sources and care about their messaging, so we will have a next generation of positive storytellers. We measure our social entrepreneurship impact using three bottom lines: People, Planet & Profits, and, as a privately held corporation, our Board meets monthly to steer the BuzzAround direction.

Do stories of good works inspire you? Do you want a hand in building strong hives? Consider becoming a Hive Builder or joining our Board. Help us spread honey, so our communities continue to BuzzAround! ~ Jacquie
