New Riff Single Barrel Bourbon Store Pick

Picked by the Whiskey Thieves in Kentucky at New Riff's Distillery!!!

"New Riff offers a robust Single Barrel Program where you will get to personally select your own one-of-a-kind barrel. Selections are bottled at barrel proof without chill filtration, allowing all the characteristics of the barrel to shine through. No two barrels are the same, each creating their own story."

Visiting and selecting this barrel was the most fun we had for sure on the Whiskey Thieves' 2022 trip to Kentucky. The journey to the Distillery from Louisville was eventful and even landing us (briefly) in Ohio. But not for long as we quickly swung around Great American Ballpark ,home of the Cincinnati Reds, back into Newport Kentucky. Now at New Riff, we promptly walked in (on time) to make our selection only to be told that we are at the wrong location!!!! OK, lets hop in the car and get to the spot! Now a touch late, and embarrassed, we show up at the aging facility for all New Riff!

From here we were greeted by the kindest and most energetic person you will ever meet in Kentucky! Creola was our host for the day but it became clear quickly she was going to become a friend. Creola knew so much about the history of the city and the buildings, that currently are home to New Riff, I thought she was a part of the local Historical Society. WOW! What a treat to learn the stories behind the ricks and what used to be. She spoke about the grains, the ricks, the barrels, the science, and all things that go into the unique Whiskies and success of New Riff.

The selection process was very "difficult" as we were faced with 6 wonderful barrels. Some aged in Independent Stave Barrels, some aged in Kelvin Barrels, some a few months older and all very different. You could tell the person who selected the single barrels for us to taste wanted to showcase all the variation in profiles New Riff can deliver. It made the Whiskey Thieves go to the white-board and start working through our selection for best barrel. As we began to come to a stale-mate on the selection that very special friend showed back up to save us from our Bourbon quandary!! Creola!!!! With expert and swift guidance she said "This One". We had it down to 2 barrels by this point but it was tough! She asked a very simple question... "Do you want a uniquely delicious barrel or a delicious barrel?!?!?

So, with her experienced palette casting the final vote, we went with "This One"!

After the selection was made we shared a glass and lots of smiles. I will never forget Creola and the Whiskey Thieves hope you enjoy this Bourbon as much as we did the whiskey and the people at New Riff!

Rebel Distillers Collection Bourbon Store Pick

Rebel's Distiller's Collection is handcrafted according to the original 1849 "Wheated" recipe from what would become the famous Stitzel-Weller Distillery, and then bottled at 113 proof to deliver a more complex flavor with a defiantly smooth finish.

We had a great selection panel(8 club members) to make up this version of the Wines and More Whiskey Thieves. While the selection was not unanimous, the Whiskey Thieves scored us another winner. Barrel #227 proved too complex to not be selected. While she may have some spice at 113proof, tons of Wheater deliciousness jumps out of the glass and lingers on the palette. As you can expect from a Wheated Bourbon, our Rebel pick is loaded with sweet notes. This barrel's complexity is also helped by the very low yield. At 5yrs old you would expect a higher yield, but not with our pick. The low yield surely helped pack all those beautiful sweet notes into the liquid. I have highlighted some of the reviews below from the Whiskey Thieves.

Mashbill: 68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley

Nose: Oak-Honey -Brown Sugar

Palette: Vanilla - Baking Spice - Cooked Sugars - Honey

Finish: Medium to Long - Inviting - Baking spice plays with sweet notes

Yield: Only 10 cases

As many of you know this is MGPs (Ross& Squids') own whiskey brand and they definitely put the best liquid into these bottles!

This beauty is wildly complex with hints of fruit and tea on the nose that gives to a delightfully balanced palette. The finish does not disappoint with a long hang that plays between spice and fruit all the way!

When we set out to find a barrel from Remus we wanted a versatile whiskey that can be enjoyed as an everyday sipper OR to make the perfect cocktail. I can't wait for you all to sample and enjoy this selection made by YOU, the Whiskey Thieves!!!

Copper & Cask Single Barrel

Last years' Copper & Cask was the biggest surprise in 2021 and our 2022 selection does not disappoint. This years' Single Barrel was selected by our very own Steve B.(AKA "The Viking"). Steve is the Craft Beer Director at Wines and More. Steve has been a Home-Brewer for over a decade and an avid Whiskey fan! We worked together to pick out this beauty from a line-up that included 7 different barrels. We both agreed that this barrel was the clear stand-out and we are confident you will love this pick. You can expect a big bold nose that matches the palette. Our pick is sweet and spicy with a wonderful mouthfeel and plenty of hang. Sitting at 117 proof, this 5.5yr MGP bourbon was distilled in Indiana and aged for 5years in Kentucky. It then traveled to Rhode Island to finish off for an additional 6 months!

Important News – Frequent Shopper Program 2022

Our Frequent Shopper Program is how the "unicorn" spirits are sold at the end of the year. The goal is to get the hardest to find spirits in the hands of the people who support the shop. As of Monday January 3rd, 2022 we began this years’ frequent shopper program here at Wines and More. The program is simple. When you shop with us and purchase beer/wine/spirits/barware, provide your name at the register to ensure your Frequent Shopper account is updated correctly. This information will not be used for any reason other than to provide access to our “Unicorn Raffle” in December. The 2021 “Unicorn Raffle” included over 30 very rare bottles. We expect even more in 2022’s raffle!

Online purchases will qualify as well. If you make an online purchase, please forward the order confirmation email directly to me. Unfortunately, there is no mechanism for me to capture online purchases without you sending me an email. Please send all of your online order confirmation emails to corey@winesandmoremilford.com.

Barrels For A Cause

The Barrel has been selected! The Custom Cask Finishes have been selected! Now we wait patiently for the finishing barrels to do their magic. We will let these Whiskey's mature for 9 months and have a kickoff event in January 2023! Thank you to the Beth-El Shelter and Milford Rape Crisis Center for being a part of this special day and journey!!

At Wines and More we have always prioritized being an active Community member. In this spirit, we are excited to announce "Barrels For A Cause."

The 2022 "Barrels For A Cause" will be Litchfield Distillery selections. Litchfield Distillery, located in Litchfield CT, is a local Distillery making great Bourbons that are being sold all over the country.

The 2022 "Barrels For A Cause" will benefit 2 local charities in Milford.

1.) The Beth-El Shelter

2.) The Rape Crisis Center of Milford

The Chairpersons for both Organizations will be joining Corey Shoop from Wines and More to help select the Bourbon directly from Litchfield Distillery! Each Organization will choose a special finishing cask, and create a custom label for their bottles, making this a wonderful way to raise awareness and support their important missions.
