When the World Looms Large:

The Drive to Develop in Adolescence & Analysis

Hans Loewald wrote that adolescence, more than any other stage of development, closely resembles the analytic situation. Given the repetition of early experiences, the rapid unraveling and reconstituting, and the potential for growth and illness, analysis echoes adolescence. Analysts often struggle to engage adolescents in intensive work to sustain a frame when the world outside looms large. Loewald’s theory of the erotic drive to develop clarifies how psychic growth occurs and is promoted in analysis, and illuminates why treatments with adolescents are often so volatile and generative.

Dr. Shaw will present the analysis of an adolescent for whom the larger world looms especially large. Race, class, gender, and the pandemic take center stage.
