What we took away from National Convention in Washington D.C. 2018

AMTA National Convention this year was held in Washington DC August 9-11, 2018 to celebrate our "75th Anniversary".

Below are a few thoughts from your Board Members at National Convention.

Shelly Cox (Treasurer) - The Opening Session was Bert Jacobs Co-Founder and CEU of Life is Good. I am reminded about the power of working.  Instead of "I have to do laundry. I get to do laundry." Not everyone in this world gets to do laundry. We think it as an activity of daily living. Some people in this world are not healthy enough to do laundry. Also changing the words "balance your life" to  "Harmonize your life". How you harmonize in your world is not the same as the person sitting next to you.

Troy Lavigne (Education) -
For the past 3 years now, I have found an inspiring moment at each National Convention and this year was no different. The Colorado and Connecticut chapter took time to spend a lunch together and share each other's success stories and concerns. This was an amazing moment for me as I was reminded about the joy and passion that goes into volunteering. I witnessed the passion that I have found so inspiring to me each time I sit down with the CO-AMTA board and I must say, it is encouraging to see other chapters sharing the passion to encourage massage therapy with the world!

Andy Kissick (Delegate) - (At the Assembly of Delegates)  The first position statement to be discussed was "Massage for Osteoarthritis of the knee".  Research supported use of massage treatment and the proposal sited recent studies by NCCIH (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health).  One study looked at massage treatment on 85-222 adults with osteoarthritis and determined that with 8 weeks of Swedish massage, participants showed significant decrease in pain and improvements in mobility. Delegates voted to send this paper on to an independent AMTA Nationally chosen working group to prepare it for publishable form to be reviewed by the National Board.

Nancy Specian (Secretary) - Attended the workshop:  Your Massage Website: Your Marketing Machine -
Presenter provided good ideas, up-to-date thoughts about my website.
Make sure website takes 2 sec. to load. Use links. Make website mobile ready. Create "hooks". Offer something.  People get referrals from Google. Make sure my business is on business local.  Attention span of people are now 8 sec.  Testimonials are gold. Leave a google review.  Ask client, "What were you looking for when you came to me?"
Ranking-"Be on the Ball"- website should be specific and non-specific, use non competitive keywords, develop content, include inbound & outbound links.  Look at bounce rate with email, content freshness, site age, content quality, site speed and repeat traffic.

Deborah Bruce (Delegate) - I highly recommend that any of the Colorado members seek the opportunity to be delegates to the Assembly of Delegates at the National Convention.  It was a real exciting whirlwind of intellectual stimulation and discovery.

For this education event the CO-AMTA will be learning from Lori Dowiak. Lori received a BS from the University of Pittsburgh, in physical therapy. She has extensive training in orthopedic and manual therapies through continuing education programs. As owner of Bloomfield Therapy, she provides manual therapies for all age groups; she also acts as both a presenter and teaching assistant for IAHE and is wonderful instructor with the Barrel Institue.

In this 12 hour course we will be introduced to the role of Visceral Manipulation in assisting functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic dysfunction. If you decide last minute to join us you will still be able to attend but you will not receive the group rate.
