Sustainability is the Word: INN at the LION Summit

More than 100 INN members mingled at a happy hour during LION’s Chicago summit.

More than 85 INN member newsrooms were represented among the 500 individual attendees at LION’s Independent News Sustainability Summit in Chicago last week.

Over three days along the Chicago River, attendees learned about AI and net profit, showcased their community engagement strategies and shared their thinking on conversion rates. They also spent time talking about what keeps them up at night.

INN was proud to support LION in developing programming and identifying speakers for many of the most thought-provoking panels in our role as programming partners.

Themes that emerged — and that INN will be considering as we plan programming for 2025:

  • Public policy and how nonprofits can ensure they are represented and supported in a way that doesn’t make it harder for them to do the sort of community-focused, accountability reporting they are known for.
  • Leadership transitions and leadership burnout, and how we support top leaders in their roles before they think about leaving.
  • The struggle to maintain and grow audiences in a world where platforms have changed and attention is diverted.
  • The risks and benefits of AI.

In addition to the programming, LION recognized 19 organizations with their Sustainability Awards. Among the 19, 11 were INN members: Block Club Chicago, Borderless Magazine, Canopy Atlanta, CivicLex, El Tímpano, MLK50: Justice Through Journalism, Planet Detroit, Spotlight PA, The Appeal, The Investigative Journalism Foundation and The Pulp. Congrats to the winners!

NOTES FROM THE FIELD

On Monday, INN announced new investments, resources, and the national expansion of Text RURAL to 35 RNN newsrooms with support from Microsoft’s Democracy Forward program.

Civil Eats has removed their paywall for everyone for one year. This opportunity was made possible with funding from the 11th Hour Project, a program of the Schmidt Family Foundation, and GRACE Communications Foundation.

Mobile newsrooms from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) are working to restore faith in journalism in places like North Macedonia and Daugavpils, Latvia.
