Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw first coined the term "intersectionality" in 1989 writing about the experiences of Black women experiencing both racism and sexism. As a professor of law, Crenshaw writes, "Intersectionality was a prism to bring to light dynamics within discrimination law that weren’t being appreciated by the courts." For Crenshaw, intersectionality is a way to advocate for those on the margins for their full lived experiences, and not just slivers of their identities.

How Ableism Fuels Racism brings forward the lived experience of Lamar Hardwick, a Black autistic pastor and disability scholar. In this book, Hardwick "calls [on] the church to address deep-seated issues of ableism and offers practical steps for dismantling ableism and racism in attitude and practice.”

We will meet at the church on the four Sundays in September following Labor Day weekend (Sept 8, Sept 15, Sept 22, Sept 29). We plan to meet at 12 noon at the church, eat a light lunch together, then discuss our book, finishing up no later than 1:30 pm. If you are one of our online friends and would like to join the discussion, please let me know so we can get everything set up to have an in-person and Zoom meeting at the same time.

Please contact Cindy Coble at clcoble@icloud.com to register.

Joys and Concerns

Joys:

  • We celebrate a rewarding Youth Mission Trip Luncheon, and wait excitedly to find out where the youth are off to next!
  • We celebrate the groundbreaking for the new kitchen at ACC.
  • We give thanks for the wonderful Summer Social for ACC women last Friday at Toni Medlen's home and the resources they collected to support Coburn Place.
  • We are grateful that Jim Twig is doing well after a heart procedure last week.

Concerns:

  • We hold the family of Marjorie Scott in our prayers following her passing.
  • We pray for Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the eastern coast of the United States facing the devastation of Hurricane Ernesto.
  • We pray for Diana Moore as she recovers from her fall.
  • We continue our prayers for Jane Gradison*, Vernon Scott, Davis and Bev Goforth, Pearl Ross, Sandy Zimmerman, Alex Hofer, Lori Corken-Young, David Cartwright and Karon Duffield's sister, Sharon.

We pray, as we do each week, for lasting peace and justice throughout our war torn world, for all who are suffering and grieving, for a meaningful and lasting end to gun violence in our city and around the world, and for our work to become an anti-racist people and society.

We continue to pray for our work and all work to be an anti-racist church and people.

Our Global Ministries Prayer Partner this week is Colombia.
