Get Your Flu Shot!
By now, you probably know that it is recommended that everyone 6 months of age or older receive a flu vaccination each year. While it’s best to get your flu shot as soon as it is available (sometimes as early as August)! Flu season usually peaks in January or February and continues through May. Getting a flu shot is not only the single best way to protect yourself from getting sick, it’s also the best way to prevent the spread of flu to others.
Help us make Virginia the healthiest state in the nation by getting a flu shot and encouraging your friends and family to get one as well.

To find out where to get a flu shot in your area, contact your  local health department  or use the  vaccine finder
Mental Health First Aid
Many of us assume mental illness is something that only affects others. The truth is that mental health concerns are more common than heart disease, lung disease and cancer — combined. An estimated 46.4 percent of adults will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. And 90 percent of youth who died by suicide had an underlying mental illness. That means someone in your family, workplace, school, congregation or community may experience a diagnosable condition due to life's stressors. By being trained and certified in Mental Health First Aid, you are able to identify signs of someone in distress, and offer immediate support and, if necessary, link that person to available professional support or self-help services. Find a grantee offering training in your area. You just might help save a life.
Be Food Safe This Holiday Season
Food safety is important for keeping your holiday gathering happy and healthy. However, food safety can be a challenge during the holiday season. Group gatherings may include more dishes than there is room for in the refrigerator or oven. Guest lists may also include those who are more vulnerable to illness, such as older people, young children, and pregnant women.

Follow these tips for a food-safe, happy holiday season:

Happy Handling

  • It’s flu season! Wash your hands well to prevent the spread of germs, using soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds. This will help prevent the spread of bacteria from raw poultry, too.
  • Wash all fresh produce to reduce the potential for bacterial contamination.
  • Don’t forget to also wash utensils and work surfaces to protect your food and family!

Just For The Health Of It

Mother/Daughter, Virginia Partners In Prayer and Prevention ( P3 ) Health Champions, Elizabeth Green and Alesha Ray, put their faith to action with Second Calvary Baptist Church Health Ministry Team to plan and present to the Tidewater Community, a first, annual Health and Wellness Expo, "Just For The Health Of It."

More than thirty vendors registered and delivered a strong message of health and wellness to the community on October 27th from 1- 4 pm at Military Circle Mall in Norfolk, Virginia. Success of The Health Expo was evident in the collaborative involvement and attendance of Pastor Geoffrey and Mrs. Guns and the Second Calvary Baptist Church family.

Live performances and entertainment stirred up individual and family engagement. There was lots of laughter, fun, giveaways, informational samples, nutritional taste delights, question and answer stations and an upper body massage station. The Ambassadors Motorcycle Ministry gave away Bibles for spiritual growth and development. The Norfolk Police Department was there to communicate the enjoyment of a safe environment. Some other vendors among the host of them were Norfolk Health Department and other Health Care Professionals, Norfolk State University, Eastern Virginia Medical College, Vitamin Shoppe, Health Food Center, Mike; The Fitness Junkie, Thomas Fields; The Sweet Scientist.

Lupus Toolkit for Community Action
By taking part in the ‘Lupus: Get the Facts’ initiative, you can make a difference for those affected by lupus. This toolkit provides information you need to conduct lupus community awareness presentations. The materials provided in this toolkit are designed to help individuals recognize the signs and symptoms of lupus, encourage individuals to connect with health care providers who are knowledgeable about lupus, and support individuals to care for themselves or a loved one.

Community Funding Opportunities
Part of being a good neighbor is supporting communities through local giving. Target grants help more kids get involved in youth soccer programs, and provide K-12 schools support for field trips and other things they need. Target also support community festivals and other events, and provide support for local organizations including food shelves, public safety partners and more.

Since our founding in 1901, Walgreen Co. and its employees have recognized the connection between strong communities and good business. The Walgreen motto, "The Pharmacy America Trusts," reflects our belief in ethical business practices and our respect for the dedication of our employees in improving the quality of life in their communities. As our company grows, and we bring our stores to new markets and new neighborhoods, we bring with us a tradition of supporting the health needs of our patients.

Through the Community Grant Program, Walmart associates are proud to support the needs of their communities by providing grants to local organizations.
