EV scholars program helps future engineers, mobility companies and the state of Michigan

Through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation's Michigander Scholars Program, launched about a year ago, 41 University of Michigan College of Engineering students have received either $5,000 for taking an internship with a participating company, or $10,000 for accepting a full-time position. Companies involved include Bosch, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, LG Electronics, ZF Group and more. Lamar King, pictured above, will take his love of cars and racing with him this summer when he begins an internship at GM.

GPS data from a only a few connected vehicles can greatly reduce traffic jams, delays

Using GPS data from as few as 6% of vehicles on the road, University of Michigan researchers can recalibrate traffic signals to significantly reduce congestion and delays at intersections. For an 18-month pilot study conducted in Birmingham, Michigan, a team led by Mcity Director Henry Liu used connected vehicle data insights provided by General Motors to test its system, resulting in a 20% to 30% decrease in the number of stops at signalized intersections. GM is an Mcity Affiliate member.
