What's Happening on the farm now?

SNOW, SNOW, SNOW & MORE SNOW!!

Q&A
Q: How long & at what temperature do the trees need to remain dormant for?
A: each variety has a different amount of time needed to rest, plums & apricots need the least with an average of only 250 - 400 hours needed below 45 degrees. Apples & Pears need an average of 750 - 1200 hours below 45 degrees.

Q: Does the cold weather and snow hurt the trees?
A: No, not in a typical winter, but in extreme conditions buds will be damaged. Apples will start to sustain damage after -15 degrees, while peaches will start to be damaged at -5 degrees. Once temps hit -20 both apples & peach trees could die all together.

Q: Does the snow hurt the strawberry plants?
A: No, snow is the best protector from cold injury to the plant, even better than the straw mulch applied before winter.

Q: Is winter a good time to prune my fruit trees?
A: Yes, pruning when trees are dormant is the best time to do so, but if the weather is predicted to have a warm spell such as temps reaching up into the 60s for a couple of days then suddenly dropping back into the teens that will cause damage to the area around the cut.

We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future.
