Sierra Vista Hispanic Chamber

We want to welcome our two newest members to Sierra Vista Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SVHCC) and our great Team!
  • Bisbee Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. and President of the Board of Directors, John Acosta and Tony Bedolla, Executive Director, who are the annual presenters of the Bisbee Mariachi Festival fundraiser!
  • CrossFit Cochise and owners/trainers Jason & Rachel Tibesar, who provide an excellent method of exercise for their customers!
We look forward to seeing them at our SVHCC Fiesta Mixer on 29 September at Garden Place Suites where all members can greet them and we can also present them with SVHCC Membership Plaques!!!

Karina Rice Roberts, our THCC Membership Success Representative, Oscar Damian Hernandez, our SVHCC Ambassador and Dan Valle just returned from Nacozari de Garcia, an historic community located about 75 miles south of Agua Prieta/Douglas, where they attended a business EXPO which was a follow-on to the Cananea EXPO a month ago.

We were exceptionally well received and there was much interest in our SVHCC given that they do not have a chamber of commerce. We made excellent contacts and it appears as though we may have two memberships closing this week.

Everyone in Nacozari was very interested in not only learning about our Hispanic Chamber, but also Sierra Vista. We left all the flyers the City provided us on their upcoming events and many business owners expressed an interest in doing business here in Sierra Vista, the names of  which we have passed on to the City's Economic Development Office. What makes Nacozari an important trade partner with Sierra Vista is that their state of economy is pretty strong and employment high due to the Grupo Mexico's state-of-art smelter in Nacozari that services Grupo's Cananea mine and employs a large part of the population. Therefore, the citizens of Nacozari frequently travel to Arizona to shop.  Sierra Vista and Bisbee are well positioned because Nacozarians do not cross the border at Douglas due to the long lines. Rather, they cross at Naco, AZ and this puts them basically in Bisbee and then on to Sierra Vista.

HISTORY OF NACOZARI DE GARCIA
Nacozari began with the discovery of mines in 1660. The first settlement was called Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Nacozari.

The mines were acquired by Anglo American U.B. Teader mining company in 1867, which sold them to Moctezuma Copper Co, a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge. American style housing was built, together with a library and a small hospital. Copper was hauled partially by mule trains, until the railroad was finished in 1904. By 1907, Nacozari had become the metropolis of far northeastern Sonora. It had 5,000 people, mostly Mexicans and Americans, with some Chinese. Phelps retained the mines until 1948 when they were exhausted.

A large mine, La Caridad, was discovered about 20 miles southeast of Nacozari in 1968. By 1979, the population of Nacozari was back to about 3,000. As Mexicana de Cobre, the federal government spent hundreds of millions of dollars to develop La Caridad, and revive other mines in the area. Nacozari was estimated to have 18,600 people in 1986, and 30,000 in 1989. La Caridad is ranked the third largest copper mine in the world. [1]

The municipal seat was first called Placeritos de Nacozari but changed its name to Nacozari de García to honor the railroad engineer Jesús García, who saved the town from a dynamite explosion on 7 November 1907. Besides Nacozari, there are monuments to Jesús García in many other Mexican cities and towns. November 7 is the Day of the Railroader in Mexico. All except essential employees of the National Railways of Mexico get the day off. Many streets in Mexico are named Jesús García or the Héroe de Nacozari. Poems and songs have been written about him, and the accident. [1]

The name Nacozari is an Opata word that means "abundance of nopal (cactus)".

See following photos of Nacozari de Garcia:
The beautiful Municipality of Nacozari de Garcia is nestled on mountainous land which is part of the spurs of the Sierra Madres Occidental Mountains. The large buildings in the center are historic with the one of the right being City Hall and the one on the left is the public library and museum.

The social and community gathering of any Mexican municipality is the Plaza. Here is  Nacozari's  very historic plaza located directly across from City Hall.

Here is a photo of Jesus Garcia, Hero of Nacozari and train engineer, who sacrificed his life
to save the town of Nacozari after his train which was fully loaded with dynamite and coming
from Bisbee caught fire. He maneuvered the train as far as he could from City center to save the total destruction of the town and thousands of lives.

This is a replica of Engine 501 which Jesus Garcia drove to his death to save the town of Nacozari.

EXPO NACOZARI
We had an excellent EXPO which was well attended by many business owners and which were quite diversified. We had eleven business really interested in becoming SVHCC members and six which want to speak with City of Sierra Vista Economic Development representatives about doing business in here.

A big shout out to Alonso Martinez, Luis Carlos Padilla of Grupo Mexico, and Maria Juana (Juanita) Romero, Director of Parque Pinacate for their tremendous hospitality!!! Youth Entrepreneur Academy (YEA) Initiative -  for Sierra Vista

As we have much interest from the SV Unified School District and the Arizona Regional Economic Development Foundation (both SVHCC members) in the YEA Program, we are in the process of scheduling a meeting here in Sierra Vista between our YEA Program Manager, Stephanie Bermudez and representatives of the SVUSD and AREDF in the next two weeks.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a groundbreaking and exciting year-long class that transforms middle and high school students (ages 11-18) into real, confident entrepreneurs. Throughout the class, students develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct market research, pitch their plans to a panel of investors, and actually launch and run their own real, legal, fully formed companies and social movements.

The program is hosted by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber Foundation in Southern Arizona.
