After several years of not having this day at Ferrum College, it is happening again. The United Women in Faith are meeting from all over the state on Saturday, June 1. We will hear from the College President Dr. Martin about the changes and opportunities at Ferrum, we will meet the new chaplain, tour the campus, and visit the UWF Archives. I understand golf carts for those who need them will be available. If you are interested in attending, see the registration form below. You may register online, but it needs to be in by May 15. Please let Sandra Richardson at srich7623@gmail.com know if you are going and if you want to carpool.

COPE Event on June 4, 2024

Dear Bethlehem friends, as an "Outward Bound" congregation we seek to serve and meet the needs our community, especially those who are marginalized and most in need. We are blessed to be hosting the COPE event HERE at Bethlehem on June 4. Please consider participating in this event to gain an important and impactful perspective on life in poverty through this experience. - Susan Hughes

Here is more information about COPE:

Lake Christian Ministries will be hosting a Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE) Event on June 4, 2024, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Cost of Poverty Experience is a 2.5-hour simulation that explores the lived experience of poverty firsthand through the eyes of real families. The experiential nature of this training helps organizations and communities more deeply understand the human and systemic impacts of poverty. Watch a Video explaining COPE here.

There is no cost to participate in the event, however, tickets are required. As participants, you may choose to volunteer as a Resource Leader or to come as a participant (General Admission). Our event is limited to a total of 120 participants. If you sign up, PLEASE remember to fill your role on June 4.

Suncatchers

We love that you loved our anniversary suncatchers!

The first batch we ordered is sold out, but rest assured, more have been ordered and are on their way. If you would like to reserve a suncatcher, please sign up on the bulletin board outside the church office. We will have them for sale Sunday morning as soon as they arrive. If you are out of town, you may order them directly from the vendor; note however, there will be a shipping charge. The QR code is below.

Our Outdoor Learning Center is one year old and the final step is to stain the fence. Bethlehem Preschool is now finished for the summer, and the Outdoor Learning Center should be ready by July 4th. All materials will be provided and dates for painting teams will be according to your availability. If you can help with this project, please contact Jackie McKeown at 703-627-5151. There will also be a sign-up in the welcome center.

Climate Justice was well supported at the General Conference. “We celebrate this General Conference for embracing so many petitions calling us to be better stewards of God’s creation,” said the Rev. Pat Watkins, a leader of the United Methodist Creation Justice Movement. “As we celebrate a wonderful sense of unity as United Methodists, we hope that we will continue to wrap our arms around creation as we wrap our arms around each other.” Watkins cited one of John Wesley’s three simple rules: “Do no harm.”

Petitions approved the “Church Land Use” resolution that directs church trustees to assess ways to bring property “back in harmony” with God’s creation and updates the Energy Policy Statement urging conferences, churches, and agencies to develop plans for using more renewable energy sources.

Another petition that passed urges every church to establish or strengthen its green team and calls on churches to support legislative and policy efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“These resolutions will bring structure to the ministry of creation care. Now everyone needs to do their part and get behind local green teams and community projects,” said the Rev. Nancy Blade, co-chair of the Northern Illinois Conference Eco-Sustainability Task Force.
