"Youth, Truth and Imagination”
Art Exhibition
You’re invited to the opening reception at the
Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery
| |
Villa Charities invites you to join us on Thursday, March 23 at the opening night reception for an exciting new art exhibition at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery.
“Youth, Truth and Imagination” is a collection of works by eight talented young artists.
Discover an exhibition of unique styles and varying subject matter extending the limits of form and content with artworks that are irreverent, entertaining, humorous, challenging, and beautiful.
These talented young artists exist simultaneously in the age of “social media” and in the age-old world of materiality, painting on canvas and carving wood. Like a weather report, they alert the audience to the future of art - issues of identity; reimagined figuration; situational episodes of conflict; the importance of camaraderie, the importance of contemplation; the history of storytelling; the necessity of foundational tradition.
Artists include Grace Swanek, Fabrizio Sclocco, Jobelle Quijano, Amanda Maccagnan, Serena Kobayashi-LeBel, Angelo Kalum Cavagnaro, Nicko Cecchini, and Miles Ingrassia.
The exhibition is sponsored by The Lindy Green Family Foundation.
Date: Thursday, March 23, 6:30 - 9:00pm
Tickets: FREE (No advance registration required)
Location: Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery, Columbus Centre
Exhibition continues to April 20, 2023.

Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute
#TributeThursday – Donor Spotlight
It’s #TributeThursday, where we feature immigrant histories from the Villa Charities Italian Canadian Immigrant Tribute Project. This week, we're sharing the story of Silvio Sacco and Lidia Sacco, who immigrated from Abruzzo in 1958.
“June 4, 1958 was when my father Silvio, my mother Lidia Pichelli, my sister Domenica (Mima), and I started our 9-day journey from Abruzzo Italy, to Canada, arriving at the Port of Montreal. As it was still summer, there was no need to stop in Halifax. My family took a bus to Toronto and arrived at Union Station around midnight, where we slept on a bench waiting for a bus to take us to Welland in the morning. In 1964, our family welcomed a third child, my brother Enzo. In true Italian style my mother was picking cicoria (dandelion greens) in a nearby field along the railway tracks when she went into labour. Enzo was born later that day at Welland General Hospital…”
