  November/December, 2017
This month's e-newsletter is a combined November/December issue. One reason for this two-in-one is that I was away a lot in November. That includes being at the American Medical Writers Association's (AMWA) annual conference in Orlando, FL. I was honored and delighted to accept AMWA's Walter C Alvarez Award for excellence in health communication. Thanks to AMWA & The Sturdy Group LLC for permission to share this photo with you.

Thanks also to you for wanting to know what's new in Health Literacy Consulting. This issue highlights tips, podcasts, and health literacy news.

Health Literacy How-To Tips:
  • Health Literacy and Children. November's How-To Tip includes abundant resources to learn more about helping children assume greater responsibility for their own health care.
  • How Adults Learn. December's How-To Tip looks at ways to apply key points of Malcom Knowles' Adult Learning Theory to the work we do in health teaching.
Health Literacy Out Loud (HLOL) Podcasts:
  • Law Enforcement, Risk Management, and Health Literacy. Heather Schragg oversees risk and quality management in a hospital. Mitch Ross is a police officer. These seemingly different fields actually have a lot in common when it comes to communication. Listen as Heather and Mitch share ways to build trust and understanding with patients and the public.
  • Advance Care Planning: Communicating Clearly Before There Is a Crisis. Dr Aretha Delight Davis and Dr Angelo Volendes are committed to helping patients and families make informed decisions about advance care planning and end-of-life care. Listen as they share strategies and tools for making these conversations easier for everyone.
  • Efforts to Improve the Readability of Medication Labels. Dr. Joanne Schwartzberg's leadership has helped health literacy flourish and grow. She now is working with others to improve the readability of medication labels. In this podcast, Dr. Schwartzberg talks about why this is needed, what is being done, and how podcast listeners can help.
Health Literacy News:
  • Helen Osborne of Health Literacy Consulting. Delighted to announce that I have a new FaceBook page. I look forward to using this as an additional way of communicating with you. Please like, link to, and otherwise join me in this effort. Please encourage others to do so, too.
  • Health Literacy from A to Z: Practical Ways to Communicate Your Health Message, Second Edition. I'm in the midst of transitioning to a new publisher. The plan is that this new version will be ready in early January. I may have some decisions to make, such as artwork for the cover. Please email if you're willing to share an opinion about these choices.
  • The Health Literacy Research and Practice Journal. The latest issue has 10 new articles including original research, a brief report, and guest editorial. A huge thank you to the editors and IHA for making this wonderful resource available and open to all.
Thanks for your ongoing interest in, advocacy for, and commitment to health literacy. Together, we help make the world a more understandable place.

Until January ~Helen Osborne
