Thanks for wanting to know what's new in Health Literacy Consulting. This issue highlights health literacy tips, podcasts, news, and resources.

Health Literacy How-To Tip:
  • Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Other Healthcare Shorthand. Imagine what it's like to be suddenly injured or ill. You go to the ED or ER, receive HIPAA notification, and then get an IV, MRI, EKG, and CAT scan before being admitted to the ICU. While abbreviations and acronyms like these have their place, they can also lead to confusion. This month's How-To Tip includes ways to communicate more clearly.
Health Literacy Out Loud (HLOL) Podcasts:
  • Deconstructing Stigma: A Very Public Multimedia Project about Mental Illness. Adriana Bobinchock has a keen interest in educating the public about mental illness. In this podcast interview, she talks about creating this amazing project now at Logan Airport. Adriana also suggests ways to create meaningful educational projects of your own.
  • Health Literacy & Consumer Health Librarians. As a former school teacher and now librarian, Amy Six-Means discovered the link between medical librarianship and health literacy. She highlights ways to collaborate with consumer health librarians for better health literacy.
  • Reaching Out to Elected Officials about Health and Health Literacy. Michael Jackman, District Director for US Congressman William R Keating, shares ways to make a difference from a policy and political perspective. Mike also dons his well-deserved Health Literacy Hero cape. Listen and learn about participating in the governmental process.

Health Literacy News & Resources:
  • 2017 AMWA Alvarez Award.I am truly honored, humbled, surprised, and proud to be the recipient of the 2017 AMWA (American Medical Writers Association) Alvarez Award. This high honor has tremendous meaning to me and I will be accepting it at AMWA's national conference in Orlando, FL on November 2, 2017. More information to come.
