Bill & Sandra Pomeroy Treatment Center at Crouse Health
|
|
The Bill & Sandra Pomeroy Addiction Treatment Center at Crouse Health is an exceptional building. This is because much of its interior character comes not just from the architects that created the designs but also from the collective perspective of patients and staff members.
|
|
In fact, many features evolved from a series of meetings between Crouse program staff and former patients and the architectural team — including the design of the courtyard and artwork for the public spaces – making this a truly collaborative effort.
The A/E/C team was comprised of King + King Architects, ASM Engineering, Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt (KHH), and the construction manager, The Hayner Hoyt Corporation, along with its various subcontractors. KHH was tasked with landscape architecture and civil engineering design services.
Together, these locally based firms assisted in the success of making this facility the community asset it is today — a place that helps individuals and families reset and experience new beginnings.

What to Know About the NYStretch Energy Code |
|
When the new 2020 building codes were adopted in NYS, a brand-new code was also introduced. This code, called the 2020 NYStretch Energy Code, was developed by NYSERDA and can be adopted by municipalities and other code entities as an alternative to the NYS Energy Code.
Technically it's considered a pre-approved More Restrictive Local Ordinance. As of this writing, New York City and the communities of Beacon, Bedford, Dobbs Ferry, Dryden, Hasting-on-Hudson, and Montour Falls, as well as the State University Construction Fund (SUCF) have adopted NYStretch — with more to follow.

The tragic collapse of Champlain Towers South in Florida has brought renewed attention to structural building condition reviews.
Can they identify critical structural flaws in existing buildings? Can such a review determine if a structure is safe, or stable? When should structural condition reviews be performed?
These are simple questions, sometimes with not-so-simple answers.
Yes, a structural condition review, if properly executed, can identify conditions of structural concern. But there are limitations, depending on the nature and extent of review, and the type of structural system

Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt is pleased to welcome back Paul Twyman, P.E. to our staff. Paul, who previously worked for KHH from 2000 to 2008, is a senior engineer with more than 20 years of experience in civil and structural design. He graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering.
Below is a Q&A we held with Paul so you could get to know him in both a professional and personal light!
What sparked your interest in pursuing a career in engineering?
My grandfather was an electrical engineer and when I was a kid, I always thought it was cool that he could take things apart and fix them, and it made me want to be an engineer.

A plenitude of presentations |
KHH Principal Jim D'Aloisio has over the years addressed many important topics through presentations, both in-person and online. These topics have ranged from thermal bridging to climate change – all challenges that structural engineers face on a regular basis.
Recently, he was the keynote lunch speaker at the NYSSPE Fall Conference in Saratoga in October, speaking about “Engineering Ethics: Ten Tough Questions.” He also delivered a presentation "Collapse of the Picciano North Parking Garage" and was invited to speak on the same topic at Structures Congress '22.
Additionally, Jim presented a day-long webinar session through Halfmoon Education Inc. earlier this month entitled "Structural Condition Reviews and Structural Failures in New York."
James A. D'Aloisio, P.E., SECB, LEED AP has written more than 20 articles on the relationship between building structures and sustainability and has presented over 250 times.
