Announcing New Grants

The Masterman HSA is pleased to announce $75,000 in direct grants for this year. Staff Grants ($18,000), Department Grants ($22,000), Grade-Level Grants ($24,000), and Club Grants ($11,000) will collectively serve to greatly enhance the growth, education, and development of all Masterman students.

Thank you to all HSA members—past, present, and future!—for giving to the HSA to support our school, teachers, families, and students.

We are working in collaboration with the school administration to finalize the grant application process for each type of grant and will share information with the entire school community to ensure a transparent and equitable process. Check our website later this week for details.

AROUND MASTERMAN

No School This Friday

Don't forget! Friday, December 2 is a professional development day for teachers and there is NO SCHOOL for students.

Friendsgiving Returns

The High School Student Government's first Friendsgiving in three years was a hit! Students and staff brought in contributions of food and came together to enjoy it. It was a wonderful display of community, with tables of students and staff enjoying food and conversation in a celebration of togetherness. Food from a wide variety of cultures made for a delicious and varied dining experience. It was altogether a magnificent way to spend time and appreciate each other.

A Stellar Soccer Season

The JV Boys Soccer team posted a 3-4 record on the season. Coach Tyler Weiss led the young dragons to impressive victories over non-league opponent, Perkiomen School, and PPL 4A schools Washington and Lincoln.

The Varsity Boys Soccer team finished at .500 with a 10-10 record. The elder dragons move methodically through the season, consistently scheduling high-intensity non-league 4A opponents to be ready for PPL, District 12 and PIAA state playoffs. Sitting at a constant 5 seed and waving "Buh-Bye" (pun intended), they upset Lincoln and Franklin Towne in the PPL playoffs to avenge regular season losses to both squads. The PPL championship game came down to an unfortunate header with 13 seconds left on the ticker. However, it is their third season in a row to be in the PPL championship game, fighting schools exponentially larger in enrollment each time.

The Girls' Varsity Soccer team stormed into the playoffs after finishing 2nd overall in the public league. They then proceeded to make a run all the way to the public league championship game and the district 12 finals. Sophomore Tori O. was named MVP of the public league! Three players were named 1st team all-public, and another three 2nd team all public.

Club Notices

HAMS

Calling all 6th–8th graders! Join HAMs, the Hispanic or LatinX Association, African American Cultural Committee, and Asian Cultural Association Middle School club! We meet weekly on Wednesdays at 3:45 PM in the library. Students can join us for fun activities, good vibes, and an overall rewarding experience.

Women in Politics

Do you know a Masterman HS student interested in politics? Are they curious about the intersectionality within politics? Encourage them to join Women in Politics, every Thursday in room 402. The club focuses on getting young women and feminists informed and involved in political issues, and plans to meet with local politicians throughout the year. All genders are welcome!

Clothing Drive

Masterman Feminist Club is running a winter clothes and book drive through this Friday, December 2. Proceeds will go to Project HOMEspun, providing employment opportunities to people suffering from chronic homelessness and unemployment.

Please bring new or gently used adult-sized coats, hats, gloves, and other clothing, as well as books for all levels, to ROOM 12.

Volunteer in School

Did you know?

If you want to volunteer in the school you need to complete a School District–mandated process of background checks and clearances.

Get started now so that you are ready when you receive a call for chaperones for the next class field trip!

Children's Book Council

Last spring, Ms. Kearney applied to participate in a Children's Book Council project. The CBC is the agency that sponsors Children's Book Week each year and endorses Every Child a Reader. The project is simple. Publishers send us their hot off the press books published just this year and any student who reads any of them is asked to rate them. Ms. Kearney collects these ratings or ballots each week and forwards the numbers to the CBC.

In April, the CBC will publish a list of the 30 favorite books for middle grades, and Masterman students will have had a hand in choosing them. This project adds 300 new books--mostly fiction--to the school library collection. Students can find the CBC Favorites Form on their Google Classroom.

Also from the library: don't forget to donate to support our participation in the PA Young Readers' Choice Awards.
