The Freedom of a Growth Mindset: Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway - You Got This!

Moms often feel immobilized and stuck because they think they need to be "perfect" and competent to take any risks or try something new, leaving them feeling frozen in fear, doubt, and frustration...Sometimes for DECADES. You are not alone. Let's free ourselves from the gripping resistance we have to embrace new challenges out of fear of not being good enough or succumbing to the fear of failing. It can feel like having cement in your shoes!

Carol Dweck, Ph.D. author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, researched and created a brilliant, widely accepted framework for living to your potential, which fiercely encourages and reinforces us to view learning and embracing new skills and challenges with an open heart and non-judgmental mindset and even to welcome the discomfort and struggle. We don't have to be good at something to learn it or act on our curiosity to try something. Life is healthier with a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. Our potential is not pre-determined, and learning is a lifelong endeavor if we can get out of our way and give up our fixed mindset.

Consider a new perspective to expand your life, live more fully, and approach life with as much curiosity, self-compassion, and a little dose of humor as possible. Thats right. You do not need to have it all together and have prior competence to try something new. Instead, we allow ourselves to embrace learning and rebuild the muscles of frustration tolerance, persistence, and courage by showing up, practicing, and not giving up so easily. You'll see that one day, when you least expect it, your discomfort and fear subsides, your confidence grows, your mind clears and you now own a new skill, competency and new source of joy and confidence in your life. Our brain needs this adaptable, elastic, and agile attitude for healthy living and our aging process, too.

Do you have a fixed or a growth mindset? Allow yourself to have self-love and self-compassion to move toward a growth mindset.

Do a quick assessment to see where you are with your current mindset to begin your journey:

A Fixed Mindset Looks Like This:

• I stick to what I know

• My potential is pre-determined

• My abilities are limited

• Feedback is personal and critical

• I am either good at it or not

• I avoid failure at all costs

• I do not try to learn new things that are difficult

• I am open to trying new things

A Growth Mindset Looks Like This:

• I can learn new things

• My effort and attitude determine what is possible

• Feedback is constructive

• I am not afraid to fail

• I can deal with uncertainty

• Failure is an opportunity to grow

Try to keep this in mind to free yourself from limiting beliefs that hold you back from living a more enriched and joyful life. A growth mindset is waiting for you. It is NEVER too late. The Work Like Mother method is grounded in the growth mindset. Let me know how you are doing at hilary@worklikeamother.com

How Moms Crack the Confidence Code

How "THE SWISS CHEESE APPROACH" and "S.M.A.R.T." Living Enable Women To Access Their Authentic Self , Vitality and Full Impact

Work Like a Mother® is a daily living model. Poking small tiny, uncomplicated holes (like we see in Swiss cheese) every day in the giant overwhelming thoughts, feelings, and challenges which are often accompanied by our less than helpful "inner critic" is the secret tactic to disrupting, overcoming, and replacing that paralyzing brain fog of doubt, immobilization, and feeling like we have cement in our shoes when we as moms yearn to reclaim and reinvent ourselves professionally. This strategy is one of the most powerful secret ingredients to confidence and courage building - creating daily evidence of your competency in small, attainable realistic ways. Your resources to thrive are right beneath the surface and they come flooding back if you open the gates!

Use SMART activities as the unit of this daily action strategy (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Specific) to flush out ways using a professional mapping process to make tiny steps forward to engage in realistic professionally relevant activities and rebuild the resources you need to access your professional power again. Everything counts - no matter how big or small. A phone call, a one-day or a 6-week class, a part-time job, a volunteer role....to name a few. You do not need to know where this activity leads. You don't need to make big decisions. You don't have to get it right or make the perfect choice. It is simply a SMART activity - it starts and ends. You are not putting all of your eggs in any one basket, you are not doing anything too scary, and you are simply moving forward in a low-risk confidence-building, stimulating, and manageable way. Work Like a Mother is your partner for replacing your "inner critic" with your "inner friend" and being able to fulfill your dreams for the impact you yearn to make in the world. You got this! I'd love to hear from you. Message me at hilary@worklikemother.com
