ISU Lecturer Wins GEM Innovative Educator Award from Idaho State Board of Education, CapEd Credit Union
An Idaho State University mathematics lecturer has earned one of the state’s highest general education teaching honors.
Recently, the Idaho State Board of Education’s General Education Committee and CapEd Credit Union announced the winners of their General Education Matriculation (GEM) Innovative Educator Awards. On the list was Annik Martin, senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, who took home the honor for Objective 3: Mathematical Ways of Knowing.

Great work, Costain Nachuma, Rifat Ara Tasnim, and Kyler Bingham, for nabbing some awards at the Intermountain Engineering, Technology, and Computing Conference!
Costain received the Best Poster Award for his and his co-authors' research into AI tools like ChatGPT and which ones developers are using to help them create new software.
Rifat earned a Best Paper Award for her and her co-author's look at how text-based instructions in video games influence the player’s performance and experience.
Kyler took home a runner-up in the Overall Conference Paper Award category for his and his co-author’s work in designing a lightweight, compact, and foldable robotic arm system for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Bengals presented more than a dozen papers and posters at the conference hosted at Utah State University.

Call for Participants: Generative AI Higher Education Fellowship
The Generative AI Higher Education Fellowship from the Office of the State Board of Education provides a stipend of $15,000 to each selected fellow for activities in the 2024-2025 academic year.
This funding is intended to support activities such as course reassigned time, attendance at relevant conferences, and other related expenses that contribute to the fellow’s development and engagement in the field of artificial intelligence. In turn, fellows will offer statewide professional development (in a variety of forms) around generative AI. The AI Fellows will also work in close collaboration with the Office of the State Board staff and will help shape the future direction of the Statewide Generative AI Alliance.
Applications are due June 5.

Office for Research Staff Lead American Association for Laboratory Animal Science District 8 Meeting
A pair of Idaho State University employees took the lead in planning a gathering of nearly 300 of their counterparts.
Recently, Mia Benkenstein, animal facilities manager, and Rhonda Buchanan, laboratory animal technician, helped to organize the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) District 8 meeting. Held over three days in Seattle, the annual event brought together animal research and care professionals from Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

INL to Host Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning Technology Expo June 25
Following the success of last year, Idaho National Laboratory is hosting another Artificial Intelligence – Machine Learning Technology Expo. This public event brings together technology enthusiasts, AI experts, and thought leaders to demonstrate and discuss INL’s latest advancements and possibilities in artificial intelligence. The event will feature interactive product demonstrations, networking opportunities, and a technical poster session.

NASA Develop Program Seeks Applications for Fall 2024 Term
NASA DEVELOP projects focus on helping local, national, and international communities address their environmental concerns while utilizing NASA's Earth-observing fleet of satellites. For the fall 2024 term, NASA DEVELOP will operate at six locations across the country at select NASA Centers and other regional locations. This is a great opportunity for participants who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. Participants will work with NASA scientists, partner organizations, and science advisors to learn about using NASA Earth science data in water resources, disaster management, ecological conservation, and other applications to address environmental community concerns.
The Fall 2024 application window will be open online from May 6 to June 14, and the term will take place from September 16 to November 22.
