From Rejection to Redemption: Idaho State Prof. Awarded NSF CAREER Grant to Develop Next-Gen Fertilizers
When Cori Jenkins received an email rejecting a research proposal she had spent countless hours drafting, to say she was disappointed would be an understatement.
The funding Jenkins had her eyes on was a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award. This grant is among the most distinguished offered by the agency and is a coveted prize for university faculty near the beginning of their research career.

It was a pleasure to host leaders and researchers from Idaho National Laboratory’s Energy and Environment Science & Technology Directorate and the Center for Advanced Energy Studies for a tour of some of our large-scale research facilities in Pocatello! | | |
Resident inspectors from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission were on campus earlier this month for a week-long workshop on motor-operated valves.
Hosted by the Department of Nuclear Engineering, in collaboration with the Idaho State University College of Technology, the class teaches the inspectors the finer points of the valves responsible for controlling the flow of coolant in nuclear reactors and helping ensure the reactors operate safely.

Applications Open for Idaho NSF EPSCoR I-CREWS Seed Funding
Applications for the first round of Idaho NSF EPSCoR I-CREWS Seed Funding awards will be accepted until May 30. These awards (Small Seed Funding, <$55k, <1 year performance period) are expected primarily to be led by early-career researchers initiating research directly related to Energy Water (E-W) Systems. Established or mid-career researchers seeking to expand or apply their expertise into a new E-W research direction will also be eligible. Multi-institutional collaboration will be prioritized but not required due to the small size of the award. Funding may support personnel, summer salary, travel, and/or other resources needed to generate preliminary data and/or explore high-risk, high-reward E-W activities.
If you have questions, contact Kitty Griswold, Colden Baxter, Bruce Savage, or Morey Burnham.

FLSA Overtime Changes
On April 23, the Department of Labor issued a final rule to alter the overtime pay regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The rule increases the minimum salary threshold for most exempt (not eligible for overtime) employees to $43,888 on July 1, 2024 and then to $58,656 on January 1, 2025. The rule also implements automatic updates to the minimum salary threshold that will occur every three years. ISU’s Office of Human Resource is closely following developments on this final rule and will continue to keep campus informed of any expected impacts or changes to employees.
Separate from this, HR will be communicating upcoming changes to our annual compensation and CEC in the coming weeks.
