Author of An Inventory of Historic Architecture Caswell County comes back to this month!
Historian, preservationist, author and artist Ruth Little will speak in Milton on Saturday, September 17 at 10 AM.
Milton Renaissance Foundation is hosting the event, however, please note the location will be at the temporarily-named Milton Renaissance Performance and Museum Annex, which is the former Christ Church/Woman’s Club building at the stoplight.
Ruth came to Milton, and Caswell County, along with Tony Wrenn, in 1972 as one of the first hired NC historical preservationists. Their work produced An Inventory of Historic Architecture Caswell County, North Carolina. Under the NC Division of Archives and History and the NC Department of Cultural Resources, the photos and documentations logged recognized the county’s architectural attributes at that time. The Inventory became a local resource and a book to which historical enthusiasts still refer. In the fifty years since, Ruth has continued to document NC architectural history for the State Historic Preservation office and as a private consultant. She owns Longleaf Historic Resources as well as Longleaf Studio. The studio allows Ruth to combine her love for historical documentation with the art of painting Carolina-themed landscapes and architecture. Both are located in Raleigh.
Also among the books Ruth has authored is Sticks and Stones: Three Centuries of North Carolina Gravemarkers. This beautifully produced book features cemetery monuments of marble as well as those of wood and concrete made in African American communities.
The Book of Ruth, Taming Ghosts, Saving History is Ruth’s latest writing endeavor. Copies of this autobiographical account of her journey, both personally and professionally, will be available for purchase at the Milton event.
