April 2023

Happy April! We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter celebrating with friends and family. We have been keeping busy at the YWCA Wheeling and hope to share some of the accomplishments, events and building updates in the months to come!

Capital Campaign

Did you miss the announcement?

The YWCA Wheeling announced our Capital Campaign in January to secure the final $1.8 million of an $11 million campaign! We have raised over 80% of our goal through foundations, grants, historic tax credits and individual donors during our quiet phase. Now we are coming to our community to help us make the necessary structural renovations that will keep us in this building for another century.

We Received the Purple Ribbon Awards!

The YWCA Wheeling was nominated for the Purple Ribbon Awards, which is through DomesticShelters.org to be recognized for outstanding achievements through our Family Violence Prevention Program. We were nominated in 4 categories and won in 3 categories: Outstanding Thrift Shop, Outstanding New Service Launch of YWeCook, and we nominated The Health Plan for Business Partner of the Year and they won in that category. Thank you for your continued support of the YWCA Wheeling and all we are doing for those in need throughout the Ohio Valley.

YWCA Wheeling 13-Week PSA Campaign

Beginning in November of 2022, we created 30 second PSA's with WTRF-7 News in relation to domestic violence and the services the YWCA Wheeling provides to victims. If you missed those, they can be viewed on Youtube!

What are we doing?

  • The Jr. League of Wheeling is putting on a self-care day for our clients to teach about the importance of self-care and how to implement a routine.
  • May 15th we will be starting a new Nurturing Parenting course. It is open to all parents and children. If you are interested in signing up, please call the YWCA at 304-232-0511.
  • We have a smoking cessation class currently being taught by a Life Coach from The Health Plan for our clients.
  • This summer we will be hosting a weekly gardening hour for our clients at Magnone House.

Building Update!

The elevator is currently being replaced. The elevator has not been replaced in over 69 years! While it has been well maintained and not let us down, it was time to upgrade the ol' girl.

OVAASA Scholarships

Our Ohio Valley African American Student Association Banquet will take place on May 11th. We have received 89 nominations from Ohio Valley schools. If you are interested in funding a scholarship, please reach out to Ron Scott at cdcodirector@ywcawheeling.org
