by David Reynolds

Wednesday, September 4 @ 6:00 pm

What We've Misunderstood

about Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill is one of the most celebrated statesmen of the 20th century, revered for his Finest Hour as Britain's resolute wartime leader. He's often seen as a solitary genius, but British historian David Reynolds invites us to look more closely at the dark days of 1940 - offering a novel interpretation of what made Churchill great. David is a professor at Cambridge University and also a regular summer visitor to Wolfeboro since the 1970s. He'll be talking from his new book Mirrors of Greatness (Basic Books), reviewed by the Wall Street Journal as "fresh, fast-paced, and bracing." (Photo credit Graham CopeKoga)

2ND TUESDAY BOOK DISCUSSION

Middlemarch

by George Eliot

Tuesday, September 10 @ 1:00 pm

Middlemarch, one of the most successful and well-known novels of the Victorian era, provides an unparalleled depiction of provincial life in nineteenth-century England. Eliot's expansive cast of clearly defined characters and the rich fabric of their tales combine in this epic to create a wise, sympathetic, and perceptive portrait of human nature. George Eliot was "one of the first English novelists to realize that men and women think as well as feel," as Virginia Woolf put it. Copies are now available.
