The Summer Reading Kickoff was an enormous success, thanks to the hard work of our Youth Services team of Jennifer Benham and Melissa Hankens. They were joined by a small battalion of volunteers and staff, and the event went off without a hitch. Well, okay...there MIGHT have been hail ... and rain. But, hey, it wouldn't be a PML Kickoff event without a little weather drama.

Sharing between libraries is suspended temporarily
The change affects 200+ libraries and will continue through summer
For those of you who request books through Interlibrary Loan, we have been notified by the State Library that interlibrary lending has been temporarily suspended among 200+ participating Maine libraries, including PML, while they work through contract negotiations for van delivery service. Items that are currently in transit will be delivered or returned, but new requests will no longer be accepted.
While we do not have firm dates on the expected length of this interruption in service, Maine State Library expects that there will be no van delivery for at least 6 weeks this summer.
What this means for our patrons:
- You will still have access to the books and materials in our library.
- You are still able to request that PML purchase new books, published within the past year. Simply talk to one of our librarians.
- If you have a Portland Public Library card (available for free for any Cumberland County resident), you can certainly go to Portland Public Library and any of their branch libraries to borrow from their collection.
- If none of those options will work for you, please ask us. We'll do what we can to assist you.
Thank you for your understanding as we work through this. For more information, visit the Maine State Library Van Delivery FAQ: https://tinyurl.com/5n6t5rpn

PML will be closed on Wednesday, June 19
in observance of Juneteenth: Freedom Day

We're having our bathrooms renovated!
PML's business hours should not be affected
Beginning June 23, the PML bathrooms will be under construction. We are renovating the two existing men's and women's bathrooms to be converted to three gender-neutral, ADA-accessible bathrooms. The existing water fountain will be converted to a water-bottle-filling station/fountain unit.
For the most part, the work will be done on Sundays and Mondays when the library is closed. The work should not affect the library's regular business schedule.
While the work is being done, we will have one gender-neutral bathroom in use for all visitors. If the work spills over into a Tuesday, we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we know. The project is expected to take 4 weeks.
The Friends' Book Sale will be moved into the small alcove to the right of the PML entrance.
Thank you for your patience as we undergo this important (and exciting!) change.

PML is getting 2 e-bikes to loan out!
The bikes will be available at PML for one month, beginning this week
PML is partnering with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) and the Maine Department of Transportation to loan out two e-bikes to library cardholders who are over 18 years old. The e-bike loaner program is in its testing stage, and PML is happy to be among the first libraries in the state to test the program. We will have the bikes on loan to us from BCM for one month intervals on a staggered schedule, beginning this week.
Cardholders who would like to borrow the bike will need to view a short 20-minute training (available online) and will need to sign a waiver form. The checkout period will be for 3 days. There will be restrictions in place for transporting the bikes, so local rides are recommended.
More details will be coming soon. If you're eager to learn more, stop by the library and chat with Kelly, Stacy or Lisa.

Nifty little portable, easy-to-use audiobooks for adults
|
Playaways are perfect for taking on the go. They can be held in the palm of you hand and are pre-loaded with an audiobook. All you need are headphones or earbuds. If you want to get fancy (and you don't have to), you can even connect an auxcord to your car aux jack to play in the car (and we have auxcords you can borrow).
So if you're hesitant about downloading an audiobook to your phone ... or if you don't have a phone ... consider giving Playaways a try. We have a small collection, but we'd be happy to grow it if the collection proves popular.
You'll find the Playaway collection with the NEW BOOKS. Ask at the circulation desk if you need help finding it.

Happy Retirement, Arabella!
|
Thanks to those who joined us to wish Arabella well as she glides into retirement. She'll be sticking around until the end of June, so if you didn't get a chance to stop by, there's still time.
The Friends of PML purchased a bird bath in Arabella's honor. Check it out in the garden next time you come to the library.
|

Two new exhibits at Town Hall highlight June observances
Both are on exhibit through June
Stop by Cumberland Town Hall in June to check out two temporary exhibits. The first (pictured, left) is a six-panel exhibit on the LGBTQ+ Symposium, a conference for LGBTQIA+ people in Maine that was held annually for 25 years, beginning in 1974.
The second exhibit (pictured, right) was created for a Juneteenth celebration and focuses on educational opportunities for Black people in Maine.
Thanks to the Glickman Family Library at University of Southern Maine for making both of these exhibits available to the Town of Cumberland for exhibit.
