BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Bayard Rustin (1912-1987)

Gay Civil Right Activist

Bayard Rustin is recognized as one of the key leaders of the civil rights movement. He advised King on nonviolent tactics, helped plan the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott and was a chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. But as an openly gay man, Rustin faced discrimination of his own while fighting for the rights of others.

In January 1953, he was arrested on a “morals charge” after police officers caught him engaged with two other men in a parked car in Pasadena, Calif. The conviction, which was often used to target gay people, forced Rustin to register as a sex offender and nearly derailed his career as a civil rights activist.

“He was a prominent gay man during the civil rights movement when there was no space to talk about lesbian and gay issues,” said Karsonya Whitehead, an associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland.

For years, Rustin’s arrest sidelined him in the civil rights movement. He struggled to find work and was pushed out of King’s inner circle. Then, in 1963, Rustin’s longtime mentor appointed him as a key organizer of the March on Washington. Following the success of the march, Rustin continued to advocate for civil rights, and he brought the AIDS crisis to the NAACP’s attention in an effort to encourage others to “come out” and live their truths. Information from the Washington Post.

Join us Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 11am-12:15pm (CST)!

How do we connect and build meaningful relationships in the post COVID world? This workshop with Jacqueline Boyd of The Care Plan will provide insights around how to shape your social world. In particular strategies to find

and get to know new people and develop intimacy in your life. Increasing intimacy for you may mean dating, more healthy touch in your life, emotional intimacy or self-intimacy, and we'll be covering all these areas together. We

benefit in older age from close relationships in our lives, and we are looking forward to discussing these important issues together.

SHARE FOOD, SHARE LOVE

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Food insecurity has become a public health crisis that continues to affect our communities, with an alarming increase of 19 in the number of households facing hunger compared to pandemic levels. The situation is even worse for Black households, as the number has risen by 37. With the recent cancellation of extra money in the SNAP program, it is now more vital than ever to support organizations like Share Food Share Love.

By donating to the Share Food Share Love Food Pantry, you can make a real difference in the lives of those who are struggling to put food on the table. With just a $1.00 donation, you can help provide 3 meals for a family in need. Your generosity can help ensure that our neighbors do not go hungry.

We are calling on all members of our community to help us fight food insecurity by donating to the Share Food Share Love Food Pantry. There is a food box located in front of Tischler's where you can drop off your non-perishable food items 2/47 or bring your food donations to the church and we will take it over. Let's come together to support each other during these challenging times. Thank you for your support!

If you live in the surrounding area of Brookfield, you may qualify to be our neighbor at Share Food, Share Love. You can stop in on Tuesday evenings 7pm to 9 pm and Saturday mornings 10 am to 12 pm to apply and gather up some food for you and your family. If you do come, please try to bring your own reusable bags but if you forget, we will have bags for you.

The food box located in front of Tischler's where you can drop off your non-perishable food into this box 24/7!

Thank you!

PASTOR'S PICK CORNER -

Rev. Daniels Reading/Listening/Watching Suggestions

This time it's a podcast! "The Rest is History," hosted by Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook, both historians. Tom Holland has written several books--I recently finished "Dominion," an account of the ways Christianity has affected world history in the last 2000 years. Even in regimes which did not seem particularly Christian (such as Germany under Hitler), the influence and power of the Church, and the strands of Christianity woven into the very fabric of Western culture, guided the actions of the government, for good or ill. They discuss a wide range of history, from ancient Rome to Trump to 9/11 to the Kennedy assassination to medieval kings, with depth, intelligence and humor, not to mention nods to popular culture. I especially appreciate their series on selecting the best superhero's and other such contests. The podcast is free, with additional bonus episodes if you choose to subscribe ($6/month). It's available wherever you find your podcasts!
