A MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR | |
In today's video, Father Andrew invites you to join him this Sunday following the 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM services for Brothers Breakfast (the Best Breakfast in Boca!).
He also invites everyone to join him next Sunday for an important presentation titled "Train your Brain," an informative presentation on mental wellness for all ages which is being sponsored by The Gentle Giant Foundation and St. Gregory's Youth Group.

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN - A PATHWAY FROM NEGATIVITY TO HEALING
Sunday, September 15 at 11:30 AM
| |
St. Gregory's Youth Ministry and The Gentle Giant Foundation are very excited to co-sponsor this workshop on mental wellbeing. Clinical psychologists Dr. Maria Patton and Dr. Suzanne Lechner will offer a presentation and guide us through an experiential activity to help us "train our brains" to redirect negativity.
Though we are particularly inviting youth and parents/guardians, the event is open to anyone who is interested. The content is relevant for anyone seeking better mental and emotional wellbeing. We will meet in the Youth Room and a light lunch will be provided. Please join us!

All are invited!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Rise and Shine
| |
On the first Sunday of the month from September through June, St. Gregory's features a special worship service for our children and families at 10 am in Harris Hall which we call "Rise and Shine," which is an allusion to that wonderful children's camp song, which begins "Rise and Shine and bring out your glory, glory...children of the Lord!"
Traditionally, one of the assistant priests has led the service, but last Sunday it was my joy to lead the worship. I conducted an "Instructional Eucharist," that led the children (and the adults!) through our service. The sermon was a conversation with the children about how we clean our hearts and what that looks like. Our Confirmation Class led the Prayers of the People and served as readers for the scriptural lessons. At communion, the children gathered around the holy table, and we praised God together. It was beautiful, moving, and a true time of grace.
One of our senior members, who wanted to experience the worship, approached me about the service and expressed how much hope she felt for the next generation of the church as she witnessed the children gathered around the altar. This worship made a profound difference in the spiritual lives of the children, in the hearts of the adult worshippers and in the spirit of the Rector. Thanks be to God!
In Christ,
Andrew+

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
By Tim Brumfield
| |
For the Beauty of the Earth…
These words keep going through my mind as I travel through the Arctic Circle visiting Iceland and Greenland. I’m constantly reminded of the fragility of our planet and its extreme vulnerability to us, humans. I’m also more aware than ever of just how huge is the responsibility we have to protect it. I last visited Iceland 23 years ago and the difference in glacier size is staggering. In Greenland, the ice cap has retreated significantly inland which is evident when traversing the fjords and seeing the valleys where glaciers once were just 25 years ago.
There are some amazing ones left and the scenery has been breathtakingly beautiful with giant icebergs dotting the ocean, inlets, and harbors. Today, I’m in the town of Nuuk, Greenland which is very quaint however, quite busy with shipping and the major airport. The architecture varies greatly between modern Danish design and the quintessential traditional Danish design.
As I travel this week aboard the Oceania Nautica performing as Guest Entertainer, I realize how blessed I am to make music around the world, and at home at St. Gregory’s with all of you. I want to thank Susan Dodd for playing the organ this past Sunday and this coming Sunday and Sam Cucci for his beautiful singing both Sundays.
This Sunday, at the 10 am, Sam will sing a favorite of everyone’s, Ave Maria, one of Franz Schubert’s (1797-1828) most popular works. He composed this beautiful setting in 1825 as part of his Opus 52, a setting of seven poems for Walter Scott’s 1810 narrative poem The Lady of the Lake. An Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic periods, Schubert composed a vast amount of works including 600 vocal works, seven complete symphonies, and a large body of piano, chamber, sacred, and operatic music. His Symphony No. 8 in B minor (Unfinished) and Ave Maria are perhaps some of his most beloved works. His extraordinary life ended abruptly at the young age of 31 years due to typhoid fever.
Olive Dungan (Pullen) (1904-1997) was a concert pianist and composer who lived in Miami, Florida. She composed her setting of the Prayer of St. Francis (Eternal Life) in 1949 which became her most popular work especially among American protestant churches in the 1950’s and 60’s. Other works include an operetta for children entitled The Mysterious Forest (1964) and a four-hand piano composition entitled Tropic Night Suite (1935). Dungan advocated for greater exposure of women composers and poets throughout her life. Sam will sing this beautiful art song by Dungan for the Communion Meditation.
The Choir returns Sept 15, and I can’t wait! Our first rehearsal will be Thursday, Sept 12 at 7 pm. The Choristers (Children) will hold their first rehearsal that evening as well at 5:45. If you are interested in more information about how to join either, please contact me!
Peace to all!
Tim

WHAT DOES THE CONFIRMATION PROGRAM LOOK LIKE
AT ST. GREGORY’S?
Confirmation for youth is a three-year program, typically for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Older teens who have not been confirmed frequently join the class as well. Young people and families who are coming from other churches can meet with Fr. Andrew to discuss how to enter into this process. Baptism is a pre-requisite for Confirmation.
Fr. Andrew and Gena Vallee teach the class, using our “Life in Christ” curriculum which explores following Jesus as Lord through Scripture, church history, our ways of worship, and serving. This is all guided by our St. Gregory’s mission statement: Transforming hearts and community through Jesus’ love.
Our class meets every Sunday morning at 9:10am in the Conference Room (2nd floor, Harris Hall). All participants are welcome to join the Upper Room Time for youth immediately following Confirmation class (9:45am in the Youth Room; across from the Conference Room). Alternatively, students can join their families for the 10am worship service.
At the end of the program period, those who have made the decision to be confirmed can participate in a special Confirmation service during the annual visit of our diocesan bishop.
| |
|
CONFIRMATION CLASS
STARTS THIS SUNDAY!
Sundays at 9:10 AM
Confirmation Room
| |
Confirmation Class will meet every Sunday at 9:10 AM in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).
WHAT IS CONFIRMATION IN THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH?
In Confirmation, a baptized Christian makes "a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." (The Book of Common Prayer, p. 857)
One can be confirmed whenever he or she is ready to accept the promises made on their behalf at their baptism. This usually happens during the teen years, but adults of any age may be confirmed in the church. One must be baptized before being confirmed.
Confirmation expresses not only a desire to live as an adult Christian, it also indicates a desire to do so in the Episcopal Church and the world-wide Anglican Communion.
The sacrament of Confirmation is something that only a bishop can perform, so our confirmations are scheduled around the times when the bishop will visit our parish. Typically, confirmation follows a period of preparation, examination, and exploration into all aspects of the Christian life. This period of time may last several months.
(The above is adapted from St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Emporia, KS)

She generously donated numerous items to St. Gregory's for YAYA -- all brand new, designer pieces -- that will be the highlight of the trunk show. (By the way, a trunk show is an event where a vendor presents merchandise directly to customers at a specially designated venue.

STAYING ALERT: NEW SPOOFING SCAM
SENDER IS POSING AS FATHER ANDREW
| |
This week, an email was sent from someone posing as Father Andrew to a church staff member. The sender wrote they had a request they wanted the recipient to handle. Fortunately, the recipient identified that the email was not from Father
Andrew. This is a scam known as "spoofing."
What is Spoofing?
Spoofing is when someone disguises an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL—often just by changing one letter, symbol, or number—to convince you that you are interacting with a trusted source.
For example, you might receive an email that looks like it’s from your boss, a company you’ve done business with, or even from someone in your family—but it actually isn’t.
Criminals count on being able to manipulate you into believing that these spoofed communications are real, which can lead you to download malicious software, send money, or disclose personal, financial, or other sensitive information.
