FROM THE RECTOR

The Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu (7 October 1931 – 26 December 2021) was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, best known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist.

He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, in both cases being the first black African to hold the position.

A MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR

Music Ministry

Dear Beloved Members,

Over the next months, I look forward to sharing some of the ways God blessed me during sabbatical time. One of those blessings was a prayer that I came across which comes from the late and much beloved Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who in turn adapted it from the English explorer, Sir Francis Drake. It strikes me that this prayer speaks to our congregation's life as we anticipate our Phase 2 renovation and construction project and as we celebrate our 70th Anniversary. As always, God is faithful and challenging—it's the nature of radical discipleship responding to eternal love.

I hope you find it as beautifully moving as I do.

In Christ,

Andrew+

Disturb Us, O Lord

By Archbishop Desmond Tutu,

adapted from a prayer by Sir Francis Drake

Disturb us, O Lord
when we are too well-pleased with ourselves
when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little,
because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, O Lord
when with the abundance of things we possess,
we have lost our thirst for the water of life
when, having fallen in love with time,
we have ceased to dream of eternity
and in our efforts to build a new earth,
we have allowed our vision of Heaven to grow dim.

Stir us, O Lord
to dare more boldly, to venture into wider seas
where storms show Thy mastery,
where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.

In the name of Him who pushed back the horizons of our hopes
and invited the brave to follow.
Amen.

IMPACT

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Mark Reino

St. Gregory's has always been a beacon of faith and community in Boca Raton. This year, as we celebrate our 70th anniversary, we've been blessed to have members of our community step forward in meaningful ways to help us commemorate this important milestone. Among them, Mark Reino, the esteemed owner of Merit Mile – an award-winning integrated advertising, interactive, and PR agency based in Boca Raton – stands out. A selfless member of St. Gregory's, Mark, along with his talented Creative Director, Saul Darville, have gracefully dedicated their expertise to commemorate this special milestone. Their creativity has manifested in the beautiful 70th Anniversary logo, capturing the essence of our church's long-standing legacy. Furthermore, the duo generously designed the 70th-anniversary banner, which Father Andrew proudly unveiled last Sunday, illuminating our Harris Hall sanctuary with the visual testimony of our journey.

It's not merely the design or the aesthetics that merit attention but the selfless spirit with which these contributions were made. Mark donated his and Saul's time, talent, and passion without expecting anything in return. Such acts reaffirm the power of community and the spirit of giving that St. Gregory's has championed for seven decades. As we approach our festive gala on Thursday, November 2nd, we're reminded of the importance of every individual's effort in "Making a Difference" to our beloved community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mark for his unwavering support and to Saul for his artistic brilliance. They have truly gone the extra (Merit) Mile and we are forever grateful. Together, they have enriched our celebration, reminding us of the beauty that arises when faith and community intertwine.

MUSIC MINISTRY

A MESSAGE FROM TIM

Music Ministry

What a joy it was to welcome back Fr. Sherman on Sunday, and to the 10 am worship The Choir of St. Gregory’s! They sounded wonderful and I’m so thankful for their dedication and commitment to excellence in all they do!

This Sunday, we read in Matthew’s Gospel about Jesus’ teachings on love and forgiveness… “forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”  The anthem will be “My Eyes for Beauty Pine” by Herbert Howells utilizing a text by Robert Bridges with these words…“Tis Love, ‘tis heavenly Love. And every gentle heart that burns with true desire, is lit from eyes that mirror part of that celestial fire.”  May we find inspiration to love and forgive one another from the heart, with true desire, seeing God in the eyes of all.

If anyone would like to audition for The Choir of St. Gregory’s or if you have a child in grades 3-8 interested in singing with the Choristers, please contact me at tbrumfield@st-gregorys.com. I will be in communication with parents about new beginnings with our Choristers as we resume rehearsals next week!

With blessings,

Tim
