FROM THE RECTOR

A MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR

In today's video, Father Andrew invites you to join us for two special opportunities.

On Saturday, September 14, at 4:30 PM, Father Emilio will lead a Healing Mass in the Chapel. This service, centered on the healing power of Jesus Christ, includes prayer, Eucharist, and Anointing with Holy Oils. All are invited to attend and receive this blessing.

On Sunday, following the 10 AM service, a mental wellness workshop titled "Train Your Brain" will take place in the Youth Room, and is open to everyone. This workshop focuses on mental health and well-being, offering valuable tools for mental wellness and overcoming negativity .

IMPACT

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Train Your Brain Mental Wellbeing Workshop

It takes a village…

This week I sent out a mailer to our Youth Group families and referenced that familiar saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.”  (Actually I shared a witty take on it by some clever soul:  “I keep hearing it takes a village to raise a child.  Do they just show up?  Or, is there, like, a number to call?”)  The meaning remains the same:  the work of raising children is sacred, it is hard, and it is challenging to do alone.  I think “raising grownups” is also sacred, hard and challenging!  We all need nurture, encouragement, support and shared wisdom.  There’s no age limit on this fundamental need.

So, where is this village that is supposed to help?  I think of St. Gregory’s as a village, a network of support that surrounds and uplifts, a well of collective wisdom that counsels and guides, a loving home that offers respite and refreshment.  As we seek to live into this village model more deeply, we as ministry leaders continually try to offer program opportunities that further these aims.

This Sunday at 11:30 am, our Youth Ministry team and the Gentle Giant Foundation are co-sponsoring a mental wellbeing workshop entitled “Train Your Brain:  A Pathway from Negativity to Healing”.  Featuring an engaging presentation and an experiential activity, the program will guide participants in managing our thought processes to create a more positive, peaceful and harmonious inner atmosphere.  From this place of peace, we are much better equipped to meet life’s challenges and savor all its goodness more deeply.  Our presenters will be Dr. Maria Patton (beloved member of St. Gregory’s) and her colleague Dr. Suzanne Lechner, both clinical psychologists committed to the work of helping people achieve better mental wellbeing.

I invite everyone who is interested to join us in the Youth Room at 11:30 am.  There is no cost for this workshop and a light lunch will be provided.  Everyone is welcome.  Together we can strengthen our village, our Beloved Community, and make a difference for ourselves and for our neighbors.  Please join us!

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN - A PATHWAY FROM NEGATIVITY TO HEALING

Sunday, September 15 at 11:30 AM

St. Gregory's Youth Ministry and The Gentle Giant Foundation are very excited to co-sponsor this workshop on mental wellbeing. Clinical psychologists Dr. Maria Patton and Dr. Suzanne Lechner will offer a presentation and guide us through an experiential activity to help us "train our brains" to redirect negativity.

Though we are particularly inviting youth and parents/guardians, the event is open to anyone who is interested. The content is relevant for anyone seeking better mental and emotional wellbeing. We will meet in the Youth Room and a light lunch will be provided. Please join us!

MUSIC MINISTRY

A MESSAGE FROM TIM

By Tim Brumfield

I’m greatly looking forward to this Sunday as we welcome the Choir of St. Gregory’s back to the 10 AM service! Our first rehearsal will be this evening, Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 7 pm in the choir room. If you are interested in singing in the Choir of St. Gregory’s, please contact me to schedule an audition!

AND our Choristers will also begin their rehearsal this evening at 5:45 in the choir room! If you have a child in grades 3 and above who is interested in singing, please contact me or simply come this evening!

As we begin the Fall season, I want to make us even more aware of the beautiful hymns which we sing together. Each one is not only a work of art but a testimony and sermon unto itself. They help us to understand more fully our scriptures and their meanings as they retell the stories of the bible through the wisdom and artistry of countless poets and authors, set to music by some of the world’s greatest composers.

This Sunday, we will read from the Epistle of James about how we should refrain from judgement of others and our tongues can be like a fire in the forest. For the Sequence Hymn we will sing a hymn by William Boyd Carpenter (1841-1918), “Before thy throne, O God, we kneel: give us a conscience quick to feel, a ready mind to understand the meaning of thy chastening hand…for sins of heedless word and deed, for pride ambitious to succeed, for crafty trade and subtle snare to catch the simple unaware…forgive, O Lord, we cry.” And in the Gospel of Mark we read…”He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Our Offertory hymn will be one of my favorite hymns “Take up your cross, the Savior said, if you would my disciple be…

For the Offertory Anthem, the choir will sing “Draw us in the Spirit’s Tether” by Harold Friedell (1905-1958), an American organist, composer, performer, conductor, and educator having taught at the Juilliard School and Union Seminary. He was appointed Organist and Master of the Choir at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in New York City. His contribution to the Episcopal Church through his many choral and instrumental compositions is invaluable.

Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) was known as Richard de Wych, and was the Bishop of Chichester, later canonized in 1262. He is widely remembered for the prayer the choir will sing on Sunday which he supposedly recited on his deathbed. The Latin text was transcribed to English only as recently as 1898 by Cecil Headlam. The words of the prayer were adapted and used for the popular song “Day by Day” from the musical Godspell (1971) by Stephen Schwartz. The Choir will sing for Communion a beautiful setting of this famous prayer composed by British composer L. J. White (1910-1970) which will feature soloist Anja Yargici.

I’ll see you in church!

WHAT DOES THE CONFIRMATION PROGRAM LOOK LIKE

AT ST. GREGORY’S?

Confirmation for youth is a three-year program, typically for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Older teens who have not been confirmed frequently join the class as well. Young people and families who are coming from other churches can meet with Fr. Andrew to discuss how to enter into this process. Baptism is a pre-requisite for Confirmation.

Fr. Andrew and Gena Vallee teach the class, using our “Life in Christ” curriculum which explores following Jesus as Lord through Scripture, church history, our ways of worship, and serving. This is all guided by our St. Gregory’s mission statement: Transforming hearts and community through Jesus’ love.

Our class meets every Sunday morning at 9:10am in the Conference Room (2nd floor, Harris Hall). All participants are welcome to join the Upper Room Time for youth immediately following Confirmation class (9:45am in the Youth Room; across from the Conference Room). Alternatively, students can join their families for the 10am worship service.

At the end of the program period, those who have made the decision to be confirmed can participate in a special Confirmation service during the annual visit of our diocesan bishop.

CONFIRMATION CLASS

STARTS THIS SUNDAY!

Sundays at 9:10 AM

Confirmation Room

Confirmation Class will meet every Sunday at 9:10 AM in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION IN THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH?

In Confirmation, a baptized Christian makes "a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." (The Book of Common Prayer, p. 857)

One can be confirmed whenever he or she is ready to accept the promises made on their behalf at their baptism. This usually happens during the teen years, but adults of any age may be confirmed in the church. One must be baptized before being confirmed.

Confirmation expresses not only a desire to live as an adult Christian, it also indicates a desire to do so in the Episcopal Church and the world-wide Anglican Communion.

The sacrament of Confirmation is something that only a bishop can perform, so our confirmations are scheduled around the times when the bishop will visit our parish. Typically, confirmation follows a period of preparation, examination, and exploration into all aspects of the Christian life. This period of time may last several months.

(The above is adapted from St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Emporia, KS)

The owner of the beautiful boutique, Etoile Volin, retired after 46 years and closed her downtown Boca location. She generously donated numerous items to St. Gregory's for YAYA -- all brand new, designer pieces -- that will be the highlight of the trunk show. (By the way, a trunk show is an event where a vendor presents merchandise directly to customers at a specially designated venue.

Please stay alert and vigilant.

Spoofing and Phishing — FBI

STAYING ALERT: NEW SPOOFING SCAM

SENDER IS POSING AS FATHER ANDREW

This week, an email was sent from someone posing as Father Andrew to a church staff member. The sender wrote they had a request they wanted the recipient to handle. Fortunately, the recipient identified that the email was not from Father

Andrew. This is a scam known as "spoofing."

What is Spoofing?

Spoofing is when someone disguises an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL—often just by changing one letter, symbol, or number—to convince you that you are interacting with a trusted source.

For example, you might receive an email that looks like it’s from your boss, a company you’ve done business with, or even from someone in your family—but it actually isn’t.

Criminals count on being able to manipulate you into believing that these spoofed communications are real, which can lead you to download malicious software, send money, or disclose personal, financial, or other sensitive information.
