MAKING A DIFFERENCE
The Joy and Beauty of Piano and Poetry!

Last week thirty members and friends in Christ gathered at the lovely home of Tom and Cassandra Hancock for the last event in this year's Summer Series—Piano and Poetry.
As our beloved Timothy Brumfield played on the Hancock's grand piano, the guests gathered to listen and be transported by the words and sounds. We began by reading two poems written by Tim's father, Don Brumfield. Clearly, creativity and bringing beauty to life courses through the Brumfield family! We then read poems by David Whyte, the contemporary British poet. For a treat google "Blessing of Sound" and "Blessing of Light" and you can find the poet reading his own work. Then followed a selection of other well-known poets such Mary Oliver, John Donne and J.R.R. Tolkien and lesser-known poets like John Burnside and John O'Hara. Two resident poets of St. Gregory's – Shelly Jones and Cassandra Hancock, our hostess—had their poems read as well. After several poems were read, Tim would play musical pieces to complement the themes of the poems concluding with a medley of George Gershwin's compositions.
Joy and beauty filled the home and the souls of all those gathered. It was exquisite. I felt like I had been to church! As I reflected on the evening, I kept returning to the power of joy and beauty—gifts from God—to replenish us. Like the bread of life and cup of salvation, we feed on beauty and are renewed by joy. This night was a true feast, and it made a difference! Thanks be to God.
In Christ,
Andrew+

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
By Tim Brumfield

As we anxiously await the choir’s return on September 15, we’ll enjoy having Sam Cucci as soloist this Sunday at 10 am. Susan Dodd will be playing the organ as I’ll be away on a performance cruise to Iceland, Greenland, and Nova Scotia. Lori Snow will be playing flute for the 8 am as well as the Rise and Shine service. I’m so grateful to all of these wonderfully talented musicians on whom I can rely to make everything go beautifully while I’m away.
Sam will be singing the ever-beautiful and popular Panis Angelicus by Franck. César Franck (1822-1890) was a French Romantic composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher born in what today is present-day Belgium. He studied in Paris and was an improviser extraordinaire holding the position of organist at the Basilica of St. Clotilde in Paris. He composed his beautiful setting of the Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels) in 1872 for tenor voice, harp, cello, and organ, incorporating it into his Messe àtrois voix.
Sam will also sing another favorite of everyone’s for the Communion Meditation. Albert Hay Malotte (1895-1964) composed his setting of The Lord’s Prayer in 1935, and it achieved almost overnight popularity. He dedicated it to baritone John Charles Thomas whose radio performances introduced it to the world. Malotte sang as a choir boy at Saint James Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, later studying organ in Paris. He played the organ for silent movies in Chicago and concertized throughout the USA and Europe, spending his later years as a composer in Hollywood, CA scoring films and animations for Disney Studios. Although winning several awards including an Academy Award for Ferdinand the Bull in 1939, he is most remembered for his religious compositions, most notably The Lord’s Prayer.
Blessings to all and have a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend!
Tim

WHAT DOES THE CONFIRMATION PROGRAM LOOK LIKE
AT ST. GREGORY’S?
Confirmation for youth is a three-year program, typically for 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Older teens who have not been confirmed frequently join the class as well. Young people and families who are coming from other churches can meet with Fr. Andrew to discuss how to enter into this process. Baptism is a pre-requisite for Confirmation.
Fr. Andrew and Gena Vallee teach the class, using our “Life in Christ” curriculum which explores following Jesus as Lord through Scripture, church history, our ways of worship, and serving. This is all guided by our St. Gregory’s mission statement: Transforming hearts and community through Jesus’ love.
Our class meets every Sunday morning at 9:10am in the Conference Room (2nd floor, Harris Hall). All participants are welcome to join the Upper Room Time for youth immediately following Confirmation class (9:45am in the Youth Room; across from the Conference Room). Alternatively, students can join their families for the 10am worship service.
At the end of the program period, those who have made the decision to be confirmed can participate in a special Confirmation service during the annual visit of our diocesan bishop.

CONFIRMATION CLASS
STARTS THIS SUNDAY!
Sunday, August 25 at 9:10 AM
Confirmation Room

Confirmation Class will meet every Sunday at 9:10 AM in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).
WHAT IS CONFIRMATION IN THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH?
In Confirmation, a baptized Christian makes "a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." (The Book of Common Prayer, p. 857)
One can be confirmed whenever he or she is ready to accept the promises made on their behalf at their baptism. This usually happens during the teen years, but adults of any age may be confirmed in the church. One must be baptized before being confirmed.
Confirmation expresses not only a desire to live as an adult Christian, it also indicates a desire to do so in the Episcopal Church and the world-wide Anglican Communion.
The sacrament of Confirmation is something that only a bishop can perform, so our confirmations are scheduled around the times when the bishop will visit our parish. Typically, confirmation follows a period of preparation, examination, and exploration into all aspects of the Christian life. This period of time may last several months.
(The above is adapted from St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Emporia, KS)

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM
On Sunday, Aug 25, our "Meet & Greet" day, we prayed and meditated (we do this every time), we talked about our themes for the year, we reviewed upcoming Youth Group events and...we played with PlayDoh! As an ice breaker, we all created something from a Bible Story and everyone had a chance to guess what our creation was (loaves and fishes was a popular item!).
During our opening prayer and meditation time, we also listened to a beautiful original composition by our own Tim Brumfield entitled "By Otter Creek". Click the link below to listen to this feast for the senses!

We rejoiced with Tab Jenkins on her recent baptism, Hannah Sherman on her graduation, and Jacob Norris on his work promotion. We ended the evening with a beautiful compline service from the New Zealand Book of Common Prayer.

A little info about Etoile...
The owner of the beautiful boutique, Etoile Volin, retired after 46 years and closed her downtown Boca location. She generously donated numerous items to St. Gregory's for YAYA -- all brand new, designer pieces -- that will be the highlight of the trunk show. (By the way, a trunk show is an event where a vendor presents merchandise directly to customers at a specially designated venue.
All trunk show proceeds will benefit St. Gregory's Youth & Young Adult Ministry.

STAYING ALERT: NEW SPOOFING SCAM
SENDER IS POSING AS FATHER ANDREW

This week, an email was sent from someone posing as Father Andrew to a church staff member. The sender wrote they had a request they wanted the recipient to handle. Fortunately, the recipient identified that the email was not from Father
Andrew. This is a scam known as "spoofing."
What is Spoofing?
Spoofing is when someone disguises an email address, sender name, phone number, or website URL—often just by changing one letter, symbol, or number—to convince you that you are interacting with a trusted source.
For example, you might receive an email that looks like it’s from your boss, a company you’ve done business with, or even from someone in your family—but it actually isn’t.
Criminals count on being able to manipulate you into believing that these spoofed communications are real, which can lead you to download malicious software, send money, or disclose personal, financial, or other sensitive information.
