Baseball gathered another couple wins, including an epic 10-4 win over Garden Grove HS at Angel Stadium! The same evening boys volleyball closed out their season by upsetting the number one team in league, which came on the heels of a tournament championship! It was a fitting ending for a program that grew immensely throughout the season, and defined grit and resiliency. Congratulations to Coach Blea, Coach Kailiponi, and the team.
Thank you Buena Park Rotary for celebrating our employees of the year with a nice luncheon and monetary contribution! It was great to be able to recognize Amanda Klaus and Angelica Belmudez for their amazing work in front of state, city, and local organization representatives.
|
Lastly, Juniors, next week is the last week of state testing! You've done a great job so far...finish strong and show your proficiency in ELA! I know you guys can do it! Sleep, eat, and focus!

The Misadventures of Fernandean
Midway through the all-important CAASPP testing season at BPHS, our duo found themselves put to the test...literally! But while in the pictures below you see the end result of our duo's four hour grueling exam, one that Dean found quite humorous, the turn of events that led them into the testing room was nothing short of the definition of irony. It all began that morning when Fernando put on Jagged Little Pill, an epic album beloved by not only our duo, but all those who champion Ms. Morrissette for her uncanny connection to the angst-ridden emo-pop rock sensation movement of the mid nineties. But while they head bobbed to the third single from this iconic album, the infamous lyrics started to become all too real around them. As Dean hung up the phone, wishing his wife a happy anniversary, they heard rain begin to fall on the roof of their lair. Dean's expression changed to one of complete horror, 'it's not my wedding day, but it is my anniversary,' he managed to express, as he began to hyperventilate, feeling the invisible weight of irony upon him. But also feeling hungry as he smelled the burnt bread left a little too long in the toaster, Dean reached into his drawer, looking for a knife to butter his darkened bread. But alas, the drawer only had spoons. "Blasted spoons," Dean cried, "when all I need is a knife!" It seemed like there must have been thousands of them in the drawer, as he rummaged through, failing to locate the utensil in need. Seeing his friend in panic mode, Fernando explained to Dean that he could just use the backside of the spoon to butter his bread, good advice he just didn't take, as Dean, in a fit of frustration, tossed the burnt bread out the window for the birds. "Eek-gad," exclaimed Fernando, "there's a fly in my Chardonnay," as he quickly threw the drink in the sink, only later realizing it wasn't a fly at all, but rather bits of burned bread that had fallen off when Dean flung it out the window. Feeling like they were living the lyrics of the song, and knowing neither of them smoke, but also realizing life had a funny way of sneaking up on you, they both bolted to the safest place they knew on campus...the math department! Knowing they were in the middle of state testing, the security measure in place not only ensured there would be no discrepancies in the testing protocols, they also knew the security measures were a Crazy Alanis Album Song Protection Plan...or CAASPP for short. But in order to enact the plan, they needed to show mastery on the CAASPP...so they sat for the test, only to find the ease of the test a bit humorous. And while they finished, Fernando collected his roll of raffle tickets, a lottery he hopes to win before his ninety-eighth birthday. With many decades left before the possibly fateful moment, our duo turned in their tests and left to pack their suitcases for another epic adventure.
Stay tuned for future adventures of Fernandean...

On Saturday, the Agriculture Department attended the annual Southern Region FFA State Degree and Proficiency Banquet. Four of our Buena Park Agriculture students received their State FFA Degree. The State FFA Degree is awarded to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to the California State FFA Association and made significant accomplishments in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). Approximately 2,485 State FFA Degrees are handed out each year. That number represents approximately 3% of the California FFA Association membership, making it the State's highest honor. In addition to their degree, each recipient receives a gold State FFA Degree charm.
Congratulations to Emily Talavera, Bryanna Garcia, Joselyn Andrade, and Scarlett Sanchez!

Buena Park High School values all student’s social-emotional health, and we have developed a center that houses resources to support students throughout the day. Students who need a safe place to cope with anxiety, stress or need someone to talk to can visit our COYOTE CORNER (Room 27) at the front of the school. The Corner is open before and after school, during lunch and breaks, by appointment with a therapist, or with a pass from a teacher or administrator. Please stop in and visit and know that "Support is just around the CORNER."
Coyotes,
Hope can be a funny thing. In times of confusion or uncertainty, hope can be the vessel that shifts paradigms or perspectives that get us through that moment, that day, or that circumstance. In times when things don't make sense, believing in the best can help you take that deep breath and keep moving forward. And, reflecting on how we overcame stuff in the past and how those things helped us become who we are today can be what brings hope through challenges that push our character.
Sometimes, however, hope can just be funny! This week, I want to remind you that laughter can bring hope. Having something to smile about can give you the resilience to face the day. Sharing a funny moment together can activate the chemicals in your brain and body that shift your mood and perspective. So, I've attached funny things to hope for.
I hope you Enjoy!

Students...do you know your SLOs
Student Learning Outcomes |
The purpose of SLOs are to increased student awareness of their own learning
Explicitly-stated learning goals give students a way to think and talk about what they have learned. They make it easier for students to “know what they know” and give students a language to communicate what they know to others. Such awareness is considered central to learning that lasts.
