Honoring Gabe Zimmerman

Gabe Zimmerman lost his life in the January 2011 shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords here in Tucson.

Others killed by gun violence that day include Christina Taylor Green, Dorothy "Dot" Morris, Judge John Roll, Phyllis Scheck, and Dorwin Stoddard.

Gabe was killed doing what he was best at: supporting his community, trying to make it a better place for everyone, regardless of their politics or their backgrounds.

Gabe's presence will forever be a part of our community, from the Gabe Zimmerman Davison Canyon Trailhead to the Gabe Zimmerman Meeting Room at the U.S. Capital to the January 8th memorial at the Old Pima County Courthouse.

Gabe's whole family has been devoted to fitness, running, and the Arizona outdoors, and we are honored to be able to celebrate the spirit of Gabe and highlight the possibilities for our community through the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.

We are grateful to Ross Zimmerman (standing with Gabe in the Mt Lemmon photo above) and Julia Strange at Tucson Medical Center for developing the concept of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.

Applications Open for the Gabe Zimmerman Public Service Awards

The Center for the Future of Arizona is currently accepting applications for the Gabe Zimmerman Public Service Awards through April 29, 2024.

Awarded in three categories (Community Builder, Emerging Leader, and Civic Leader), honorees exemplify the impact Gabe Zimmerman had in connecting communities and engaging Arizonans.

Any Arizona-based non-elected public servant can be nominated for the awards.

Why We Raise Funds for BEYOND

Every registration for the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown raises $10 for BEYOND, a local non-profit with year-round health programming.

BEYOND was founded as an annual community-wide outdoor event that occurs the second week of every year to commemorate the anniversary of the January 8, 2011 shooting tragedy. It was initiated by members of Gabe Zimmerman’s family and is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our community by providing opportunities for people to come together, get outside, and learn to be healthier.

BEYOND became the home-base three years ago for a beloved community event, Meet Me at Maynard’s, and together we are thrilled to celebrate 15 years of building health and community this April 2024. To celebrate, we have kicked off a campaign “Give $15 for 15 years” to show this community’s support of the events, and our commitment to keep it going strong for years to come.

All events are free and open to everyone. No need to pre-register. Join us in giving back!

"These programs have allowed me to feel more connected to the Tucson community." This was one of many of the responses that were received on the annual survey about the impact that Meet Me has had on people’s lives.

Since their inception, these weekly events have been free, including incentive awards to and for those who attend regularly. Over 25,000 people have attended in those 15 years.

Jannie Cox, our good friend and beloved co-founder and now BEYOND Board Member, said: "Meet Me at Maynard’s has been one of the most joyful experiences of my life. I have so many cherished friends and beautiful memories. It’s all about getting out with friends and family, getting healthy exercise, and supporting our downtown. What a wonderful journey!"

The small staff at BEYOND and dozens of volunteers bring energy, experience, and a fierce commitment to healthy lifestyles. BEYOND continues to fulfill our Meet Me motto...building community through fitness, and to pursue our BEYOND mission of improving the health and wellness of our community.

BEYOND is made possible by countless volunteers, donors, and the support of local non-profits and businesses, including our major sponsors, Tucson Medical Center, Rio Nuevo, and Run Tucson, among others.
