If you're an avid rugby fan and
perhaps a passionate Englishman too then you might have been as
delighted as I was on Saturday to finally see England perform to
their potential and out play a spirited Australian side.
Will Greenwood made some interesting comments during his analysis
after the game and also in the build up to the game earlier in the
week on Sky Sports rugby club. The constant theme underpinning his
analysis of the England team was the importance of trust. In fact
Will describes trust as "the most important thing in rugby". Coming
from a man who was a part of that amazing team that won the World
Cup in 2003 he knows his stuff.
This led me to dig around and I found this fantastic video snippet
of Will talking to some bankers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBZLWHBC5lE. He
talks about that it was not important to have the best 15
individuals in the world but it was critical to
have the best units, teams within teams. He talks about how they
endeavoured to do 100 things 1% better.
I found this analysis very inspiring and it led me to muse on how
we manage to get the best out of trust and create teams within
teams. Greenwood puts it beautifully when he said, "When you trust
that your colleague is doing their job properly then you can
concentrate on yours"
Perhaps it was trust in self and trust in colleagues that
instinctively told Ben Young's to make a break from inside the
England 5 metre line, to feed Courtney Lawes who then trusted his
ability to draw 2 men and supply the pop pass to Chris Ashton who
then made the scintillating break, and step inside, leaving the
Australian full back for dead.
Maybe the culture of the England team is developing where they do
believe in each other, from the top down and who knows, maybe we've
timed it well and next World Cup in 12 months time we can take on
the All Blacks and best them in their own backyard. But before I
get too carried away we have Western Samoa tomorrow at Twickenham,
good luck to the boys, I know that I will be watching.
