I joined the Dignity U Wear team a month ago - and what a month it has been! You see, I've been thinking a lot about this very question, the meaning of dignity.
To me, dignity is the state or quality of truly feeling worthy of honor or respect, having a sense of pride in oneself. I believe without dignity it is almost impossible to have self-worth. How can you pull yourself up from a difficult situation without believing in yourself? Being bullied because of how you look, going through an abusive situation, experiencing extreme poverty, a career change - such as moving from military to civilian life. These are all life situations that any one of us or our children can go through. You see, no one is immune from losing their sense of dignity.
What impact has Dignity U Wear had on the countless children, families in crisis, homeless and veterans we have served? Giving someone that very gift of dignity can be life-altering. Can we really comprehend what this means to those who need it the most? Those who may feel helpless after experiencing a life event beyond their control? Those who lose everything and have to live on the streets? I truly believe that the gift of dignity, in a simple gesture such as new fitted clothing, can help pick someone up and spark that belief in themselves again, is something no words can even describe. Without self respect, what is there really? Dignity helps people to keep moving forward, even under difficult circumstances.
