Dear Carolina,
For many communities, this school year has started with hope.
In Nebraska, Commissioner of Education Dr. Matthew Blomstedt sees “reason for optimism” and improvements in student engagement. “This I believe to be a product of increased attention to social and emotional needs of students coupled with resources that schools have implemented in the midst of the pandemic,” he testified Tuesday at a legislative hearing, where he was joined by CASEL CEO Dr. Aaliyah A. Samuel and other leaders to discuss students’ social, emotional, and academic needs.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is a key component of recovery, helping to accelerate academics and support mental wellness. That’s why nearly one-third of school districts across both red and blue states have invested COVID-recovery dollars in SEL. At the hearing, Dr. Samuel summed it up this way: “Supporting social and emotional learning is the best path to a stronger, healthier future for our students.”
