UCHM Update

United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM)– the Louisville community ministry for the Crescent Hill/Clifton area – is going strong. Most programs that slowed down during the pandemic – because of COVID concerns – including children & youth and senior programs – are back up and running. Children’s & youth programs are in the midst of switching from summer camp to after-school programs.

After seeing a lot of families for the food pantry and emergency assistance during the height of the pandemic – when a lot of working-class people in particular were out of jobs – activity leveled off. But recently the demand for food has rebounded, apparently fueled by inflation, including in the price of food.

CHPC involvement in the ministry has tapered off somewhat with some volunteers needing to step back due to COVID concerns. No CHPC person currently serves on the UCHM board.

Two ways in which CHPC folks could get involved with this ministry right now are:

  1. Drop food or supplies (frozen meat, canned chicken or tuna, cooking oil, flour, pasta, laundry detergent, or personal hygiene products) off between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday – Friday at the back door (buzz the buzzer) of the UCHM building at 150 State Street, off of Frankfort Avenue sort across from the School for the Blind. UCHM’s food pantry supplies are very low thanks to the very recent run on food.
  2. Volunteer in any of three other ways: (1) Pick up food if you have a larger SVU, van, or cover-able-bed truck from the Dare to Care warehouse off of Fern Valley Road on Monday or Tuesday mornings; (2) deliver frozen TV dinner-type food once a week for Meals on Wheels, on Tuesday morning, to local older adults; and (3) volunteer in the Food Pantry – helping people connect with food – between 1 and 4 p.m. on any day Monday-Thursday.

Pray for this vital ministry where we serve and work with our Crescent Hill/Clifton neighbors.

Can We Talk?

Tools for Conversations about Racial Justice,

a 2-part virtual workshop with Cory Lockhart, activist, artist, teacher

Tuesday, August 23 and 30

12 - 2 p.m.

Do you wish you felt more skillful when talking about racial justice? Do you either avoid the difficult conversations or get into them, only to find yourself frustrated, dismayed, tongue-tied, or uncertain? How do we help create space so that both parties have a chance to speak honestly and be heard? How do we move from “us” and “them” to a greater sense of shared vision? How do we express ourselves in a way that is authentic, clear, and grounded?
