West River Street Bridge, Providence
RIDOT is working to replace the structurally deficient West River Street Bridge, carrying approximately 8,000 vehicles per day over the West River, between Corliss Street and Branch Avenue in Providence. Built in 1955, the bridge provides a valuable connection for numerous businesses between Branch Avenue and Charles Street. In addition to replacing the bridge, we will resurface a small section of West River Street before and after the bridge, and make drainage, sidewalk and ADA improvements.
We are scheduled to close the bridge to all traffic for approximately four months on Friday night, July 12 to focus on demolition and reconstruction of the bridge. West River Street between Corliss Street and Branch Avenue will be closed to through traffic, and a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Charles Street and West River Street will be in place to assist with added detour traffic.
The westerly sidewalk will be closed at Corliss Street to the south and at Branch Avenue to the north. All pedestrians will be detoured to the easterly sidewalk, and access to Amtrak and Stop & Shop will be maintained.
