Welcome to the June issue of The Wellness Corner - the e-newsletter for our community of advocates and enthusiasts - from Big Bend Cares and Care Point Health & Wellness Center.
This issue has some important updates on Artopia 2023; announces a fun event to support Artopia; reminds everyone to be ready to Beer Fest tickets; highlights a very important health day this month; acknowledges HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day and National HIV Testing Day; and reminds you of other ways to support our mission.
Every day, Big Bend Cares and Care Point continue to provide essential assistance and quality health care to those we serve in the Tallahassee and Big Bend area (Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor and Wakulla counties). Our services include free HIV and STD testing, primary health care, dental care, lab work, sexual health education, courtesy transportation services, home-delivered meals, co-pay assistance for medications, and case management services.
These services wouldn't be possible without your generous donations, support, and contributions. To you reading this newsletter- thank you for helping us provide health care and much more to those in need - we appreciate you!
Thank you for reading!

Reminder: tickets are on sale and only a couple weeks left to donate art!
Thank you so far for spreading the word about Artopia, we are happy to announce that tickets are now on sale! Click the Buy Tickets button below to get yours today. If you or anyone you know is still interested in donating art, we are accepting submissions through June 14th. And the great part about donating is that you can get a free General Admission ticket to Artopia for each piece you donate, up to 3.
All you need to do is fill out a submission form for each piece and then drop off the art to the Big Bend Cares office. The art does not have to be original, but if it is, it will be juried by a panel and considered for cash prizes! Our digital form can be found by clicking the Donate Art button below. We also have forms in the office when you drop off, or we can bring them with us if you need to arrange pickup. You can email ssmallwood@bigbendcares.org with any questions.

It's that time of year again to look forward to the premier beer tasting fundraiser in Tallahassee, hosted by the United Partner for Human Services! This year's festival will be held August 26 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, and feature the top breweries from around the south, include some local favorites and microbreweries. This event aims to raise funds for a myriad of agencies doing good in our community, all through the love of beer!
Big Bend Cares is a partnering agency with UPHS, and so a portion of the funds raised will go back into the services we offer the community. So we need your help! From now until tickets go on sale this Friday, June 2, at 10am, please spread the word to anyone you think would be interested in attending, and let them know to use our code 'BBC'. How many people use our code will affect how much of the funds raised will go back to Big Bend Cares.

Care Point Health Update:
World Sickle Cell Day
Every June 19, we celebrate World Sickle Cell Day, which is meant to raise international awareness of sickle cell disease and the challenges patients and families face when confronting the disease.
Today, sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the U.S., affecting about 100,000 Americans. It can cause pain, infections, fevers, fatigue, strokes and organ damage, and can lower life expectancy by 20-30 years, impacting 1 out of every 12 Black people in the U.S. through the sickle cell trait, with a chance of having a child with the disease if both parents carry the trait. Sickle Cell affects about 1 out of 365 African-American babies born in the U.S., and thought it is most common in African-Americans and Hispanics, it can occur in all races.
By sharing and learning we raise awareness, and by highlighting the impact of this chronic illness, we can bring more resources towards finding a cure. As people in our community need help learning and managing their own chronic illness, Care Point is here to do all we can to support their wellness. Schedule your appointment today if you need a healthcare plan of action.

HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day and National HIV Testing Day
June 5 is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day. First observed in 2014, this awareness day honors long-term survivors of HIV, highlights the challenges faced by the community and advocates for resources on their behalf. |
| |
June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. According to the CDC, approximately 13% of people living with HIV don't know that they have the virus. This awareness day serves as a reminder to people of all ages to learn the facts about HIV and get tested for the virus. |
