Sarah recommends: Smothermoss by Alisa Alering
Pub date 7/16/24
I read this in two days, I was completely riveted! Two sisters live in rural Appalachia in the 1980s. One is a spit-fire, with an imagination that often gets her in trouble. The other is observant and calculative, dreaming of what her life would be somewhere else. But when two hikers are murdered on the Appalachian trail, the sisters' lives are changed in mysterious and supernatural ways. Not only do we follow the stories of these young girls nestled deep in the woods, but the mountains themselves have their own tale to tell ...
Key themes of this book are southern gothic horror, coming-of-age, Appalachia folklore, and human connection to nature. This book will make you think about it when you're not reading, I know I still am!

Shanna recommends: The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
This book is sure to be the hit of the summer. A slow-burn suspense coupled with rich people behaving badly. The daughter of the summer camp owner disappears from camp in the Adirondacks in the 1970s, and a varied cast of characters comes out to look for her. Her brother had disappeared over a decade before, so the story moves between the two timelines. Summer camp, tension between townspeople and the rich camp owners, and some gender politics are all tied up into one engaging story.

Liz (and Liz's mom too!) recommends: A Calamity of Souls by David Balducci
Set in 1968 southern Virginia, this racially charged murder case is a thought-provoking, amazing read. Two young lawyers, one white, one black, must team up to save their client and come to terms with their own beliefs. Full of court-room drama and morally gray politics, this story captures a bygone era, while drawing parallels to our own world today.

Our nonprofit partner, Prison Book Program, will be hosting an art exhibit at the Wellesley Free Library. The "Art from Inside" exhibit features drawings and paintings by individuals incarcerated in the prisons and jails across our country. The art expresses their creativity, as well as emotions that range from regret to hope. You can see it in the foyer of the Main Library on Washington Street throughout the month of July.
If you are moved by the untapped talents of individuals behind bars, PBP invites you to support their creative endeavors by purchasing a copy of the classic book, How to Draw What You See, by Rudy De Reyna, from the PBP wishlist on our website.
With your help, PBP will continue, as it has for 52 years, to send people in prison the free books that help them learn and grow!

Caroline recommends: Little Shrew by Akiko Miyakoshi
Little Shrew works a nine to five, dreams of a tropical vacation, and hosts sophisticated parties. Follow this adorable protagonist’s typical day navigating the corporate world. This bizarre premise makes the book a perfect choice for kids and adults to enjoy together, especially for those looking for the next step after picture books. Also, the hilarious illustrations are utterly irresistible. Tiny but mighty just like Little Shrew… I can’t stop talking about this petite book!
