Living Outside in the Cold

In Covington we have a couple of folks who choose to live outdoors. Please know our Director of Code Enforcement, Dennis Hickey, happens to be a deacon at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Madisonville. Last week he, Chief Admin Officer Erin Bivona and our Police Department made arrangements for each of our outside dwellers to have a safe and warm place to weather the cold. PD does well checks on them on a regular basis and also makes certain they stay hydrated during heat waves. Thanks to all who expressed concern.

Our Fire Department maintains a list of some of our more vulnerable citizens. During the cold weather they executed about 2 dozen "well-checks." It's a good thing.

Bogue Falaya Tammany Trace Closure

From Parish President Mike Cooper:

The Louisiana DOTD has closed the Tammany Trace bridge over the Bogue Falaya river in Covington beginning on Thursday, January 18, for several weeks as part of the Collins Boulevard Expansion Project.

State contractors will be removing and replacing a section of the bridge in order to further progress the expansion project. More closures can be expected along this section of the Trace until the project is complete next year.

Keep Covington Beautiful

Well, This is Cool (Part 3 of 3)

Per Mr. Jack Terry, "Looks like the current street name changes began with an ordinance dated October 2, 1956. This ordinance describes in detail the reorganization of Covington’s streets into a north, south, east, west alignment. It notes and approves a study funded by the planning commission that shows the new names and numbering of Covington’s streets."

Prior to 1956, the avenue blocks were numbered by how far they were from the Bogue Falaya River. The Ross homes are 13 and 12 blocks from the river. The street-name changes made all addresses west of Jefferson Avenue "West" and all addresses east "East." Hence, the Rosses are now 6 and 5 blocks from Jefferson. Everything north of 21st Ave became "North." Everything south of 21st Avenue became South. The north-south streets are named after the U.S. presidents in chronological order from Washington to Cleveland. Exception: There is only one Adams Street. President Fillmore's street is misspelled as Filmore (one "l" instead of two).

Valley Termite Control was named after Vallee DeBellevue … my wife Karen's grandfather. Karen's mom, Diane Kramer, was unaware of her father's enterprise until we saw this ad. His partner, L.L. Lacroix, was his brother-in-law.
