What's Happening in Mathematics Education
The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) 2017 Annual Conference will be held February 9-11, 2017, in Orlando, Florida at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. The General Session will feature a panel moderated by Ed Silver entitled, "Enhancing the Mathematics of K-12 Teacher Preparation: Multiple Perspectives Across the Mathematical Sciences," and the Judith Jacobs lecture will be given by Marilyn Strutchens.

NCSM is striving to provide year-long professional learning opportunities that follow the theme of Mathematics Leadership in a Time of Change: Building Leaders at all Levels utilizing It's Time and PRIME resources.

What's New at NCSM-Equity and Social Justice Corner
At the end of August 2016, NCSM President Dr. John Staley invited all members and affiliates to a call for a Collective Action to Develop Awareness of Equity & Social Justice in Mathematics Education. NCSM, along with other organizations and educators, are committed to continued professional learning and awareness around this topic.

This month's reading is:  The Impact of Identity in K-8 Mathematics.

Suggested questions include:
  1. What are equitable instructional practices that support the development of students' mathematical identity and sense of agency?
  2. How can we advocate for the implementation of these practices?

Message from the NCSM President, John Staley 

Reflecting on the events of this month, I am reminded of the importance to staying focused on the goal of making mathematics more meaningful, relevant, and accessible for all students. As we, the mathematics education community, continue the work to achieve this goal, there is a sense of urgency that must be must be coupled with a deep resolve to ensure that our commitment to a mathematics education agenda that is just and equitable. Our commitment must stress the importance of humanizing the work as we support all teachers in building classroom environments and providing learning experiences that allow all students to develop their mathematical identity and agency.

Do you serve in a mathematics education leadership role?  The 49th Annual NCSM Conference will take place in San Antonio Texas in April 2017.  If you are a current NCSM member (as of Sept. 1, 2016), and have not had the opportunity to attend this outstanding conference focused on cutting edge topics in mathematics education in the past three years, please visit the NCSM awards page to apply for an Iris Carl Travel Grant.
