Tai Tokerau Trades Training Newsletter
Tuhia ki te rangi,
Tuhia ki te whenua,
Tuhia ki te ngakau o ngā tāngata,
He aha te mea nui o tenei ao?
He mokopuna, he whanau whanui, he tāngata!
Write it in the sky,
Write it in the land,
Write it in the hearts of the people,
What is the most important thing in this world?
Our future generation, family, community, but most importantly, the people!
Tēnā koutou katoa,

With Te Tai Tokerau and Tāmaki Makaurau currently in Alert Level 4, we extend kindness, strength, and aroha to all those significantly impacted by the restrictions during this time.

We acknowledge that health and safety is imperative; therefore, to ensure the health and wellbeing of all stakeholders are maintained, Tai Tokerau Trades Training has postponed the Mid North and Far North Tools of the Trade events until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui,
kia haumaru te noho
Be strong, be brave, be steadfast, be safe and stay home

On a positive note, our mahi whānau are safe and adapting well to their surroundings and home environment. The EEB team have keen apprentices in their whānau bubbles, with their tamariki exploring potential career pathways at home, and we wondered if you have encountered similar experiences in your whānau bubble?

Our team members have experienced
  • Building apprentices click-clocking around the home in high heels, hammering the firewood with the scattered nails and screws all over the house
  • Parent sneakily observed their little Tane Mahuta supporting one another, climbing to the highest cupboard to grab the paint supplies to become painting apprentices. The offer was declined for the walls and doors to be painted.
  • A full day of lawyers arguing their views and perspectives of the home chores. Unfortunately, they are still working on their negotiation skills
  • Rising portrait artists drawing on data collection paperwork, before realising they are also paper plane engineers
  • Musicians singing and playing a rock concert as the night begins
  • Mad scientists learning about 'how to remove permanent markers from white textured wallpaper'

We would love to hear about your lockdown experiences, if you would like to share your korero and/ or experiences, please feel free to email eeb@4ts.nz
Far North Mana Wāhine Mahi
The Mana Wahine Mahi Far North event was extremely well-supported. Student and school participation exceeded expectations.

We had 68 Wahine attend on the day and 90 registrations, which blows our target of 50 out of the water. We were so thrilled with the high attendance.

We were so proud to see the students so well engaged and enjoying themselves as they rotated through various industry stations, promoting a considerable variety of Trade and traditionally male-dominated industries. A healthy mix of informative conversation and hands-on activity kept the energy level high throughout the day.

We would like to sincerely thank the 13 different organisations who joined us to support this event, many travelling from Auckland and Whangarei, and a great selection of local Tradespeople. We had a great representation of Wahine Tradies; this is something that excites us. Hopefully, their words of wisdom and encouragement impact the decisions of the students who participated.

A special thanks to the industry representatives who support the Far North Mana Wāhine Mahi event. Community leader Aroha Savage, Smart Trade Solutions, Makita Tools, Craig Maisey Builders and Painters, Regent Training Centre, NZ Defence Force, Northland Wood Council/Summit Forests, GoHort, Competenz, Rodgers and Rodgers Plumbing, Fulton Hogan, Connexis, Top Energy and NZ Police

Tai Tokerau Trades Training delivered the final Mana Wāhine Mahi event in the Mid North, Thursday 12 August 2021. Industry and external schools received a warm welcome with wonderful powhiri from the host school, Whangaroa College. Over 25 Year 9 - 13 taitamahine joined us from Whangaroa College, Kerikeri High School, Te Kura Kaupapa o Kaikohe, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Taumarere and Kaikohe Christian School. They explored career pathways, encouraged by local Mana Wāhine in mahi.

The students engaged in an industry panel presentation represented by local female industry leaders from:

  • Defense Force, Arihi Reihana, Ngāti Hine
  • United Civil
  • GoHort, Maria Fathollahi, local horticultural expert
  • Shelley Field, HR Manager of Top Energy
  • Karen Lucich, Summit Forestry

Key discussions centred around encouragement, determination and awareness of challenges young women may face. Industry representatives concluded with powerful messages and advice to pursue their goals and career pathway.

They were privileged to give back to their community and provide learners with encouragement, guidance and advice as a young person growing up in a small settlement.

Te Tai Tokerau Virtual SpeedMeets
Brought to you by E2E Te Tai Tokerau, Virtual SpeedMeet 2021. Due to the unfortunate circumstances of Alert Level restrictions, e2e are using an online method to stream SpeedMeet virtually into your whānau bubble.

Virtual SpeedMeets bring together students and employers from various industries 'speed-dating style' via short ten-minute mini-interviews. If both employer and student note that they are interested, a match is made, and we pass the student's contact details on to the prospective employer. The events allow students to have valuable discussions with prospective employers, learn more about a whole range of industries, and are a great way to practice interview skills.

Both school students and employers can register for these events. If you are part of a company that wants to connect with youth and promote student pathways into your industry, this is a fantastic way to achieve this and reach many motivated students in a short timeframe!
