Why Are People Reacting to Others This Way?
A young woman posed this question to me at an event I attended. She truly wanted to know why. She could not fathom why anyone would shoot someone that just approached them or their car. I admit it is not an easy question to answer because the answer is complicated.
It includes; mental Illness, poor self-control and the abundance of firearms.
Because we live in a Digital Age all that gets weaponized by watching toxic
messages either on TV or on line.
That means if you have an 80 year old
man with firearms and a mental illness becoming more paranoid by watching toxic tv shows you have the perfect storm.
Unfortunately Ralph Yarl walked up to the door of someone who was weaponized with more than a gun.
I believe, in this case, this 80 year old man needs to receive the highest
level of punishment there is.
You see the only thing that will convince others not to do this is if the
perpetrator gets the "Book thrown at them" The fear of being imprisoned for life may be the biggest deterrent.
The fear of killing someone for no reason has to be bigger than the fear of and bias towards Black Men & Boys.
People like this live in a perpetual state of flight or fight. They live in what is called the "Lizard" part of the brain. They do not live in the "reasoning" side of the brain.
Finally, all of these shooters had the availability of firearms. And in some areas of the country the "Make MY Day" Laws make it difficult to prosecute. We need better Gun Control
no question AND we need better Mental Health Systems.
IN Ralphs case however and the case of the cheerleaders and the little girl and her dad, There is no excuse regardless of the State Laws because you have to prove you are in imminent danger and none of these shooters can prove that.
Lastly I want to talk about Xenophobia, The fear of the other or stranger. It is a mental illness when taken to extremes.
We in the US see "other" and "stranger" as "frightening and alien" and therefore, in our minds, they are not fully human.
Some of you also live in countries where this is so. When you start to dehumanize people with labels like "alien" or "you people" You join the process of dehumanizing people like Ralph. That is why I included the picture of him and also the picture of him and the brothers he was picking up. To Humanize him.
When I talk to people who are in this condition I use a fear larger then the fear they currently feel. One of my
neighbors is an old man who has talked to me about taking his gun out and shooting demonstrators. I told him I wouldn't want to visit him in prison to talk with him. That got his attention.
So to everyone asking "WHY" there is no why there is just work. Work hard on Gun legislation, Work hard on establishing a mental health system that works and stop dehumanizing people with your own words and fight others who do the same. Lastly TURN OFF Toxic social media and TV and encourage friends and family to do the same.
