Welcome Freshmen!

June 8, 2023

Welcome rising ninth-grade students and parents:

We would like to welcome you to Kenston High School and give you a preview of several upcoming events. Every month (August through June), the Kenston Bomber Bulletin is emailed through Constant Contact. Please take the time to read it. This is our direct communication between school and home. To receive this bulletin containing important information each month, it is imperative the school has an accurate and current email address for all parents. Please update your Census Verification before school begins.

Freshmen Orientation

There will be a Freshmen/New Student Orientation Day from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. Students will be introduced to the NHS Connections mentoring program that assists incoming students to become acclimated to the high school schedule and expectations. Students will receive a postcard in late July outlining the activities of the day, including meeting their mentors, receiving their lockers, touring their classrooms, introduction to extracurriculars, Chromebook distribution and school photos. If your child is unable to attend the orientation, students may stop in the high school on Wednesday, August 9 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

An informational session for parents will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in the KHS Auditorium. The session will review the schedule structure, college/career pathways, and provide parents with the opportunity for questions.

Student I.D.'s / Picture Day

All students must have their picture taken for the KHS Student IDs as well as to update Infinite Campus. Purchasing the photos is optional and watch for information in the Bomber Bulletin regarding school photos.  Retakes for those who miss out on orientations will take place on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Census Verification & Chrome Books

All Census Verification updates must be completed in Infinite Campus before student schedules and Chromebooks are distributed. The link to complete the Census Verification will be emailed to all district families from the Kenston Board of Education during the summer.

Schedules

There will be a new bell schedule for the 2023-2024 school year. School begins at 7:43 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15 and ends at 2:18 p.m. There will be three lunch periods and a flex period prior to the lunch block third period. This will be explained at the orientation and the bell schedule will be included in the welcome back packet students will receive.

Backpacks / Dress Code

Students have the option to carry books and supplies using a clear backpack to alleviate going to their locker between classes. Traditional backpacks and/or string bags are not permitted to be carried into the classrooms and must remain in the lockers. A reminder to ninth graders, students are not permitted to where hats in the building nor wear their hoods from their sweatshirts. The high school is a professional setting for all of our stakeholders and we want our students to be clearly identified for safety reasons as well as fully engaged while learning in the classroom.

Summer Assignments

English courses have required summer reading and writing assignments. Students must first enroll in Google Classroom based on their English course selection:

-English I – assignments will be posted on Classroom (code 6felrtg)

-Honors English I – assignments will be posted on Classroom (code h6n6ffi).

Service Hours

This summer is the time to start accumulating any community service hours. While this is NOT a requirement to graduate, students who earn 60 hours will during high school will earn a state Service Graduation Seal. Those students who earn 120 hours or more will receive their seal and be recognized at their commencement by wearing a Community Service Chord. This award is noted on the transcript and commencement program. Community service is highly recommended for college applications and scholarships. All community service requires a pre-approval. Please go to this link to begin the process and complete the pre-approval form. You will also need to write a short reflection on your service to be completed before turning in all forms. See the Bomber Bulletin for complete information.

Log into Google docs for the 2023 Summer Camps and Study Programs available to all students.

Athletics

All students interested in playing a sport should register in Final Forms as soon as possible. Be sure to select 2023-2024 school year.

Registering now will ensure that you are ready to go right from the start of the fall sport season and allow you to receive communications from our Bomber head coaches about summer and other activities coming up. A current physical on file is required for participation.
